Good keyboard with heavier than Apple keys?
« on: Tue, 29 November 2016, 13:52:10 »
Hi, new here. Looking for a keyboard to replace my Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard used for a bit of everything; writing, coding and gaming.

Used it for ~2 years. Find it annoying not quite having the standard layout with function keys having no spacing, extra button on numpad and no context menu key etc. It also seems quite light pressing keys. Now has a couple of flappy feeling keys and a non-registering numpad return.

So looking for something professional looking, preferably black, and quiet, with a standard ISO layout (TKL or full, unsure yet) to replace it. I don't mind what locale it is and have no need for backlighting or other gimmicks. Unbranded and non-glossy is a another plus.

I have tried what I think were red switches on a friend's gaming keyboard before and disliked them as there was little resistance and the damn clicking, so been looking at browns, clears and Topres. I hoping they are a bit heavier than my current keyboard, I guess the extra travel distance would also help though.

Been looking at these keyboards, prices include postage and tax (absolute max budget £200):
Filco Majestouch-2 TKL Browns - £114.00
Filco Majestouch-2 Browns - £120.00
Das Keyboard Prime 13 Browns - £126.95
Ducky Shine 5 Browns - £144.95
Code Keyboard V2B TKL Clears - £182.95
Code Keyboard V2B Clears - £190.95
Topre Realforce 88UB 45g - £192.00

What do you experts think? Any recommendations? Buying PBT keycaps in addition worth it?

If I could only have one keyboard from your list I'd rather type on the Topre than the others. It has black-on-black keycaps, though. Lots of folks wouldn't like that - and forget about getting a replacement set of keycaps for that one. So, if you like the stock keycaps I'd go for that one.

I've had a pretty similar upgrade path: started with Apple aluminum keyboards, then got into mechanicals. I started with Cherry MX Brown switches and then moved on to Topre. If your budget allows, the Realforce is built like a tank, isn't too loud, and feels excellent to type on. From everything I've heard here and elsewhere, also extremely reliable over the long term. I don't know that 45g is more resistance than the Apple keyboard, but there's a lot more travel so hitting a key has a bit more "action" to it. You're not going to hear any "clicky" stuff from a Topre board, except some light clatter of the key popping back up to the top after you let go of it. PBT caps will dampen that a bit, though.

As for the PBT question: switching my Topre Type Heaven from the stock ABS keys to nice Realforce PBT keys had a hugely positive impact on the sound and feel. It all became quieter and less "clattery" to use, and just felt smoother to type on (though some of that might be psychological from the sound). Anyway, if you're going Realforce, you will be getting PBT keys stock anyway, so it's not a question you'd have to address.

I'm guessing you like tactile switches, then? It all depends on how tactile you want your switches to be. MX browns and clears are barely tactile at all, much less so than the AAK you're using right now. Topre has much stronger tactility than MX brown, although it's a kind of "rounded" feel that is unlike most mechanicals - this is what makes people either love Topre or hate it. Personally I like Topre a lot, but if you want a sharply tactile feel, none of those boards will work for you.

Yep, looking for a quiet, tactile switch. I think I'd be comfortable losing a little tactility for some extra actuation force...but who knows. Hopefully I don't end up buying three different switch keyboards.

I can get the Ducky One and Filco Majestouch 2 used at about £60...that's 1/3 of the price of the Topres board. With all the love/hate reviews of Topre boards, it would suck to get it and end up disappointed with the £190 spend.

Spent just about half of the day looking at keyboards now!

Where's best to find good deals on used boards? Just missed an annoyingly good bargain thanks to Ebay not registering my bid in time :(
