Ducky Shine 5 + Soda accident. Is it done?
« on: Wed, 08 February 2017, 12:32:27 »
Folks, I'm extremely sad right now. My ducky shine 5 is only a few months old and I've managed to spill soda in it.

I was able to clean all of it from the surface and keycaps. All switches except one is working as it should.

This one switch is not as springy as the other. It's slowed to push and comes back up slowly too.

I've used the straw method with water and 99% isopropyl. When it's wet it's fine. However on the next day probably when fully dried, it comes back to that mushy feeling.

Dukcy Shine 5 is plated mounted so I guess no removal of the switch without taking it apart, which I can't even imagine doing.

Any suggestions? I really like this keyboard. Selling it and buying another one just for one switch would make me feel even more bad.

Do you have a soldering iron? It's not hard to take the switch out.

You have any krytox oil handy? Loosens up sticky and gummy switches nearly every time.

Ducky should have a warranty on their keyboards

nope. is that easy to find and is it safe to use in my ducky specifically?

I think they do have but shipping would be more than half the price of a new one.

noooo. I have -100 soldering skills and tools.

Where are you located? someone nearby would surely help out. You can probably just take apart the switch, wash it out, blow dry it, reassemble and it will be good as new.

Yeah but taking the switch apart would mean completely disassemble the keyboard and desoldering, as far as my research went.

I don't have the guts or the skills to do that kind of stuff :(

Also, I'm in Montreal.

And BTW, I'd offer to fix it for you for free but shipping to the US n back doesn't make too much sense!

Thanks man.

But nevermind my original question.

This incident made me realize I need a TKL keyboard.

Do you guys have recommendations for something similar to my ducky? I need RGB, cherry brown and now I'm thinking about picking one I could easily clean the switches. Is there such a device like that? Or if I set to get one with PCB plate I'm actually downgrading?

I spilled cider into my Das about a year ago. I cleaned it up but ended up with about 8 sticky switches. I found a kit on amazon that had a soldering iron and solder sucker and bought a handful of switches from mechanical keyboards.

I had 0 experiiennce with soldering. Desoldering and soldering new switches is easier than you think.

Keep it and fix it later on once you get your hands on a soldering kit. If you want to grab a TKL, The Ducky One TKL RGB is a great board for the price (if you want to stick with MX)

..and keep your old ducky around so one day when you meet the other local people in Montreal you can get someone to help you fix it.

Deoxit D5 is excellent for cleaning but you would need to disassemble the keyboard.  You might also need to desolder the switch, then open the switch top with a switchtop remover (they're on mechanicalkeyboards.com--but they will *NOT* work on plate mounted switches unless the switch is desoldered first), and then clean it that way.

I'm surprised no one on here or on reddit EVER mentions Deoxit D5.

BTW, disassembling a ducky shine 5 is extremely easy.

Just getting to the PCB is easy, all you need is to unscrew the screws then to pry the tabs around the plastic that keeps the grips in.  A flatheaded screwdriver can help with that.

I think the warranty is voided when the malfunction is due to spilled soda.

Disassembling is fine but I would like recommendations for a solid TKL that doesn't need desoldering. Not sure if that's even possible. From what I've understood, PCB plate = low quality, so maybe I'm better off with a metal plate but taking extra care next time.

Ducky sells TKL keyboards as well, you could start there.

desoldering isn't too hard, tbh. its not as bad as it seems. you'll be fine with some wick and a cheap iron.
as for the switches just take them apart and soak 'em in lukewarm water, then blow dry the f### out of them.
the pcb can be wiped with some rubbing alcohol or expo whiteboard cleaner.
