aliexpress cnc case
« on: Fri, 24 February 2017, 08:01:47 »
Hi,

I want to build a tkl-keyboard with a detacheable usb-cable (like the pok3r has). I know that gonskeyboards has a pcb with that feature, but I prefer the phantom pcb. I came across this case (aliexpress cnc case for filco 87) and was asking myself if A) the phantom pcb fits and B) if I can connect the "usb cable deteachable module" to the teensy 2.0.

It says it fits Filco 87, so it will fit a phantom. The detachable cable is for a Filco or other OEM board that has a corresponding plastic pin connector attached to the PCB, so it will not just plug into a teensy, which has a USB connector (don't remember if it's mini or micro)  However, you could hook it up if you want.

Are you okay with soldering?  If so, either
  • Solder a mini USB end on where the plastic part is, and plug it into the teensy
  • Buy your own mini USB cable, snip the USB A end, desolder wires from the included cable end (the end that mounts to the case with the USB connector on it looks pretty easy to desolder - the wires are nice and accessible) and solder your newly snipped USB   cable to the pins.

If you aren't okay with soldering:

You might want to contact 1up and see if you could pay extra for an additional no-solder USB connector so that you could actually do you project AND have a nice custom cable to add to it :)

Or the easiest thing would be to get a short mini USB to female USB and just run it out the hole.  Similar to the Pexon cables approach.  You'll want a mini or micro USB end on the short cable and not the plastic (Filco) pin connector.

ABORT!!

I just started reading the reviews on that case, and you won't have clearance for the teensy.  So, my suggestions are out the window.  Instead, you will have to desolder the USB connector on the teensy and directly wire the USB wires to it.  Still totally doable, just not as easy.

Thanks for the information. Had no idea that the teensy wouldn't fit. Gonna look into it.

Yeah, I wouldn't have thought that either, but the first reviewer on there says there isn't proper clearance with it installed to close the case fully.
