Keyboard Noob needs help getting Cherry MX switches
« on: Wed, 05 April 2017, 05:58:54 »
Hey guys,

I have a Filco Convertible keyboard which I purchased from www.keyboardco.com 3 months back. The left hand shift key stopped clicking, initially the key wouldn't return to its position but after wiggling it a few times it now comes back to the top but the click and actuation point is gone.

I'd send it back but postage is expensive and www.keyboardco.com doesn't replace warranty returns, they just fix the old keyboard by taking it apart and soldering. They told me it sounds like a drink spill as keyboards don't normally stop clicking but I can assure you guys it hasn't had any drinks spilt on it.

I thought I could solder it myself maybe as that's cheaper.

The keyswitches are pretty cheap from China on eBay: http://tiny.cc/n1hbky They only cost about $2.70 for 4!

Just wondering if they were genuine at all? Are there any fake Cherry MX's about? I've read about new Cherry MX switches with new stems coming out but think my keyboard has the old versions, so it wouldn't matter too much right?

Hey guys,

I ended up buying these keyswitches: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331691524352

Do they look real to you? Is there anyway to tell that they're real once they arrive?

Those should be fine.

I'm honestly not sure where all the recent heartburn has come from with people worried about getting fake cherry switches. With all the various aftermarket mx compatible switches on the market now I'm not sure why anyone would even go to the trouble of creating fakes.

It doesn't matter, they come both ways and sometimes without it at all.

Those switches should be just fine for replacing ones on your Filco. Counterfeit Cherry switches are almost nonexistent nowadays since the patent they held on MX style switches ran out in 2014. If you think something is funny once you receive them just post a thread with pics here on GH & we'll be more than happy to help figure out their authenticity. :thumb:
