K65 space and 6 key not responding but RGB still works
« on: Thu, 07 September 2017, 15:33:09 »
Hi I don't know if I'm in the right place but my k65 space and 6 key has stopped working, I've tried a full clean with isopropyl alcohol and the keys are still not responding does anyone have any ideas?

as far as I know, the only way we can troubleshoot it would be to take it apart and check out the contacts on the pcb.  It's possible that those 2 switches both have bad solder joints... but pretty unlikely they would both go out at the same time.

We need photos to help more

Thanks for the response I've taken some pictures but I cant separate the switches from the PCB because they are soldered on and I don't have a soldering iron

The solder joints look good, so that's puzzling.  Did they both stop at the same time?

Download this app and see if it registers anything on keypress.

Yeah, they both stopped at the same time and the keys are not registering on that software, I think maybe something has been spilt without my knowledge because there was a lot of sticky residue in the case of it before cleaning but it was only in the case, not the PCB.

A spill could be the issue.  The residue would be between the plate and the PCB, the part you cannot get to without desoldering all of the switches.

if there is something inside the switch keeping it from working (and not an issue with the pcb) you can touch a paper clip to both solder joints on the back while it's plugged in and see if the key registers.  If so, you're in luck bc all you need to do is desolder and fix those two switches

that's great news.  So, all you need to do is desolder those 2 switches and either open them up and clean them or replace them.  You could also try looking at some cleaning tips for spills online.  I think it's possible to put isopropyl alcohol into the switch from the top (without desoldering... but definitely unplugged!) and clean the switch.

I've had a good look at the switches that are not working and it seems like there is no connection being made between the 2 metal parts, is there a way to open the switch without desoldering?

you can either try the tricks for removing spilled materials in the switch or you will have to desolder those two.  It is a very easy process for someone who has removed through-hole components of any type.  Just need a soldering iron and a solder sucker.  If you don't have the materials I suggest you ask around and see if there are any repair people in your community who can do you a favor.

If you're going to desolder, might as well replace them.  You'll want plate mounted switches, the K65 does not have holes in it for PCB mount.

Ooops.  I just realized they were the RGB switches:
