Is there such a thing as a RGB MXclear board?
« on: Sun, 29 October 2017, 14:31:55 »
So my girlfriend is really into my keyboard hobby. She loves the idea of keycap color patterns, the feel of mechanical keyboards and making custom keys. As a mater of fact, we are making a mold as we speak!

However, the cost of a nice keyboard is still a bit much for her. She digs them, but its not something she would spend that much on. Soooo perfect Christmas present!

I don't have any RGB keyboards, but she really likes them. Both keycap lighting or just side lighting. However, she enjoys the heavy tactile switchs such as my MXclears or Zealios.

I've searched pretty extensively and I notice that there is nothing with both RGB lighting and MXclears out there. I'm guessing the housing of these keys doesn't allow for RGB lighting? On top of that, its just a rare switch.

Are there any other alternatives out there? Gateron, kailh? Even with just side lighting or underglow. And I'm talking about pre-built here. Oh and anything TKL or smaller.

If it comes down to it, I'll probably end up building her something custom, but would prefer prebuilt.

Sorry for the wall of text!

This might be what your looking for. These are Liner whites that look like clear switch. Clears typically have tactile feedback. This is RGB Prebuilt and smaller form factor https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1560 I personally can't think of any switches like MX clears honestly but truth be told there pretty over rated. I have a board with MX clears and just its not a switch for me. The bottom out force on MX clears is extremely high and I tend to bottom out its just the way i prefer to type.

Cherry does not make RGB MX Clears, unfortunately.

You'll need to swap the stems and springs from MX Clears into another RGB switches housing like Gaterons. Or just buy Zealios which are already RGB.

klennkellon is correct. There are no RGB MX Clears by default. The easiest method for you would probably be to buy some MX Clear stems off TaoBao and swap them into the housings and springs of SMD compatible Gateron Blacks or Yellows.

For the PCB, you have two main options:

You can either put these combination switches into a GK64 PCB, which has Kailh sockets to allow for switch hotswap. Keep in mind that the GK64 isn't completely programmable, if I remember correctly, and that it has a 2u left shift and a non-standard right section of the bottom row, which allows for arrow keys to be used. This means that the stagger is slightly different and  needs some compatible keycaps.

The other option is to build an RGB60 keyboard, which unfortunately isn't programmable. But it allows for a standard 60% layout.

Aside from these two options, you can swap them into a relatively cheap RGB prebuilt board, if you are handy with a desoldering gun ;)
