Teensy usb wiring
« on: Wed, 21 March 2018, 09:38:41 »
Is there a way to solder mini usb/ usb type-c port to teensy 2.0 ? I mean directly to teensy pcb, without adapters. I would just pick female port and solder that to teensy, without added thikness with adapters.
Who managed to hook up usb type-c female port ?

I don't think you can do that. To work the type C part would need to have the same footprint as the USB port on the Teensy, in order to align the solder points. But the type C has more pins - there's just nowhere on the PCB to solder these extra connections.

Assuming you can solder those tiny pins you could remove the standard mini connector and epoxy the new one upsidedown in it's place.  Alternately if you don't mind some extra length the USB pads are visible behind the mini connector so you could wire an external connector to them leaving the old connector in place.

As I understand it USB C just has everything twice so it's just a matter of connecting two new pins to one old one.  Of course the power and ground are joined to the appropriate holes/pins by default so easy to connect them, the data lines can also be tapped before their resistors if you need a second point...

Might help to know what you're trying to do :)

That's what I means - wiring it away from teensy using its pins and/or pads on PCB. For example if I placed teensy near spacebar (where are most space for wiring), and I need to move port to back side of keyboard near ESC and number. So can I do it only using teensys pins and pads without messing around with mini usb port ?
I am planning to use USB C breakout board for easier soldering.

Glue it to other side of the mini port and I can choose between two ports for EXTRA SUPER DUPER MEGA compatibility :D

If you have a Teensy look at the resistors attached to the middle two pins behind the socket - those are what I would solder to as they're significantly bigger spaced than the connector's pins.  If you feel confident great, 5v and ground are the corner pins of the Teensy so no problem there.

If you just want to move the port I'd be tempted to buy a cable mount mini USB plug to plug in to the Teensy, you can wrap it in tape or heatshrink and discard any plastic casing which would make it thicker.  This would also keep the USB cable twisted and shielded for it's full length, probably won't make a difference but would look tidier if that matters.

Either way the old socket would still be there so you keep super compatiblity - if you can get your fingers in there to plug in a different cable...

And also plug in both for DOUBLE THE POWER and for faster typing probably. Maybe even control several PCs at the same time.

This is how electricity works, right? =/?
