Cherry MX Red keyboard questions
« on: Thu, 15 April 2010, 04:45:24 »
Hello there,

As a stranger to the whole "mechanical" keyboard realm, I have recently  picked up the iRock Brown Cherry MX keyboard. Very good tactile feel, somewhat silent and very light (sometimes I feel it's too light). Quite decent for gaming.

I wanted to try a Cherry Black keyboard for strictly for fps so I picked up a SS7G. Everything is alright, keys are very stiff but the shift key in particular which I use for games is TOO stiff.

Through some more searching I've found that perhaps the Cherry MX Red are the best choice for me. I really like how the linear's feel for fps but I do not like the unreasonable amount of force required to press things down. The modifier keys are very important for games like Counter-Strike so I view the MX Blacks as a liability.

Right it looks like there are only two choices:

The " G80-3494"

And G80-3600LYC:

What is the difference between these two boards? Is it only NKRO? Does the 3494 not have NKRO? I've tried to look for someone who can sell me the 3600LYC but no one will ship to Canada. Are the actually the same board or not?

Thanks for the reading this. Hopefully someone can shed some light on the naming schemes.

I have an G80-3600LYC. Yeah it has NKRO (see all the diodes). Its also a very nice. A little light (weight of the board) compared to everything else I have, but the build quality is good.

I will be coming back to Canada in June, and I *could* pick you up a board. But me bringing it back in my luggage will be very costly as I have a whole lot of crap (including a bunch of boards) I'm taking with me.

An alternative is me sending you the board via mail (which I have done before, twice for trievalot, one of them was the G80-3600LYC).

Unfortunately, next time I will be in Tokyo will be around June 14, and I will be quite busy (as I'll be just finishing a 23 day cycling trip to Fukuoka).

Here are my costs for the two options, if I wasn't moving out of the country around that time it'd be a lot lower:

Flight then send to where you are (I'll be flying into Toronto, then going to BC after about a week): + + $250
Shipping from Japan: + + $100

I'm flexible with the shipping, so we can discuss that. Shipping from Japan can cost anywhere from 4 000 Yen to 8 600 Yen (think $50 to $100). Realize the cheap option is about 2 months.

The board could cost anywhere from $50 to $130 depending on where I buy it and what colour + layout you want. Though the average price is around $90 or so.

I really don't like gouging, but I'll be really busy so it's the only way to make it worth my while.

ripster you can feel free to steal my customer if you'd like.

The reds are just a linear version of the browns. I wonder given how relatively linear the browns are supposed to be whether there is really much of a difference.

From my limited usage of the Browns, they are different. Noticeably so.

My MX Brown board is in Canada so I can't do a direct comparison.
Bug trievalot, I sent him both and MX Brown and MX Red board.

Personally, I would get a G80-3000 with browns from Datacal.com, and mod it with the black stems from a cheap 'board from eBay.  Brown spring + black stem = Cherry red.

Or you could transplant the Black tops to the Brown switches and keep the Brown springs. DIY MX Reds, anyone?
