I have a model M from the 90's.  The bottom says it's a 52G9700.  The PS/2 cable is not detachable.

I've looked here and I've googled and every pinout reference I can find is either for older DIN or terminal model M's or is for SDL cable model M's, neither of which is what I have.  Help?

Use a multimeter as colour coding could be different.

That was not actually helpful.  If I had a multimeter, I would just check continuity between the pins of the ps/2 connector and the wires and be done.  I had been hoping that someone somewhere had done a mod on a keyboard of this vintage so that I would not have to buy a multimeter.

Let me ask again:  Does anyone know, or is there a post or wiki out there that records which wires are which as you look at the connector on the PCB for Model Ms of this vintage?

There's no such thing, there are many revisions of model m controller also internal connectors of any hardware are not defined by any specific standards. Pin outs can be changed at any revision and I moded my model M my self. Besides, you can see pin outs in my photo.

If you have a small light bulb, a battery, and some wire you can rig up a continuity tester. Take one wire directly from light to battery, and use 2 loose wires connected to the other terminals of battery and light bulb. With the bare ends of these 2 wires touching the bits you want to test, continuity will light the light.

Damn.  I guess we have to do this the hard way.  Posting this here for the benefit of others.

Here's the PCB, front and back:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/glaurungquena/42015569642/in/dateposted-public/

As you look at the front of the PCB, the connector pins do the following, from left to right:

1. Goes to the sky blue thing below the small integrated circuit, then to the capacitor.
2. Goes to the small integrated circuit, lower left corner.
3. Goes to the case grounding wire.
4. Goes to the small IC, top side, 3rd connector from the left end.

Please correct me if I am wrong, that gives me:
1. Power
2. data or clock
3. Ground
4. clock or data.

Screwing up power and ground can make smoke and dead equipment, is there any risk if you mix up clock and data?  If not, I'll use trial and error. If there is, I guess I'll be buying a multimeter.

Getting clock and ground wrong shouldn't damage anything, in theory. The pinouts you've listed is correct if your control board is same as mine when the socket(cable) is facing you. Alternatively contact Unicomp for help, they sell replacement cable and they might got information for every model m ever made.

Order one of these from Unicomp.
You can get the SDL controller board and be able to use SDL cables with it.
You just replace the one you have with the new one!
Done.

From a post I made a long time ago....
You can order the controller from Unicomp as well.

The replacement logic assembly for 1391401 is $20. To order use the link below:
http://pckeyboard.com/page/KBDCFG/CUSTOM
Enter qty 2
In the customization box enter "logic assembly 1378170"

Edit: I had to dig through all the Unicomp service tickets to finally find it.  Same controller.  Same price too.

I believe that covers everything.  All in all it is rewarding to do this project.

I know it's not the direct answer to your question, but this is a better solution in the long run.

Any doubts or questions just go see my albums on my imgur site.

And okay, I did a little more research. Is this what you are really looking for?
Data/Gnd/Clk/+5v

Which translates to:
+5v / Clk / Gnd / Data

Pins 1 2 3 4 in that order.

And for the more adventurous:
0 1 2 3 4 5
Spk Signal / +5v / Clk / Gnd / Data / Spk Gnd
RS/6000 config.

This is looking top down on the SDL cable with all 6 pins toward you, not away from you.

Be that as it may, the +5V pin is NEXT TO the Clock then the Ground and last is Data.

This is my best guess.
