Zealios vs. Zilents and their weights
« on: Tue, 24 July 2018, 22:07:44 »
Hey there, so I received my box of 65g Zilent Zealios as ordered. I made the decision based on the Massdrop 63 piece switch tester - which I was happy to buy given that I'm pretty new in the space. The tester didn't come with Zilents, but it had 62g, 65, 67g, 78g Zealios on it. After settling on the 65g I did some more digging and discovered there were now silent versions of these well-received switches. I didn't want to spend another 30$ on a sampler kit, so I took a shot thinking "they should be pretty much the same" (aka 65g zealios feel like 65g zilents).

Granted the built in dampening affects overall feel... I still feel like the 65g Zilents I received are either not what I wanted to purchase, or they're simply not as smooth nor tactile as the Zealio counterpart. So to help me answer this, I'm reaching out to you guys.

1. Has someone compared zilents to zealios and do you share the same opinion that Zealios are smoother and snappier? (didn't want to derail another thread)

2. I've taken photos of the Zealios from the 63piece switch tester, in the order that they were assembled in. The only thing I can notice is the difference in coil winding of the springs - so I'm hoping someone can confirm if these are in fact in the correct order. I have not rearranged them since getting the test, so the order should be 62, 65, 67, 78 from left to right as according to the attached supplied graphic.

3. Is the one switch a fluke?

As mentioned, the zilents that arrived simply don't feel as snappy as the one Zealio I set my heart on from the switch tester. For reference my other board has Gateron Browns, and I'm looking for more tactility without upsetting my coworkers hence zilents seemed like the best path.

Thanks.

Edit. Attached Zilent switch for reference.

I read somewhere that zeal worked with gateron to alleviate some of the spring ping, and ended up with a spring that is quite a bit different for the zilent. The new springs also have a lot more windings. Your problem could be related. I'm sure somebody will correct me...

Try swapping the 67g zealios spring in the zilent and see if it feels snappier. I found 67g to have a much quicker return over the 65g variants.

Good idea, cause it would debunk the thought that the bump clip/spring - whatever the metal piece that pushes sideways is called - is the real difference. The downside is that I only have the one 67g switch, so if I screw up opening it, game over.

FYI, DM from Henry:

"The Zilents in the recent round have different springs from the Zealios. In previous rounds they were the same, but we've made some changes due to the difference in travel distance silent stems have that affect the spring.

Leaf spring/contact are always the same for all our switches."

So I guess most recent round sampler pack is the only accurate way to go.

... Unless someone has a couple 67g switches that they recently purchased.
