Help: having problem with sound and smoothness of my Model F XT
« on: Thu, 09 August 2018, 08:35:32 »
(sorry for what is basically a copypasta of my post from reddit)

Hi, as the title implies, I am currently tinkering with some issue I have with my Model F XT, the board I receive are really new and there is barely any sign of heavy usage, I’ve given it some good cleaning, including the case, caps, and even the barrel as well, I've noticed something weird about the board, so here is the list of issue I'm having right now:

1. There is a noticeable difference in smoothness between 1u keys and the larger stepped keys, in which the larger keys are buttery smooth regardless where you press them whereas the 1u keys are smooth only if you press them dead center and they feel a lot scratchier when pressed on the edges. Tested larger stepped keys on other 1u key position as well and they are as smooth as in their original position, so it doesn't have anything to do with the barrel being all scratched up, is this the case for other Model F XT as well? (note: I also found that the 1u keys to be less smoother than my Model M, which is really baffling considering the reputation of Capacitive Buckling Spring for being buttery smooth)

2. The amount of spring reverberation on the upstroke is really bad, and no I'm not talking about the ping (love em' ping the way they do), they have a really twangy sound on upstroke that is not presence on the other Model F XT that I've heard on other typing demo, so far I can't find the cause of this but I suspect spring wear, here's a sample of this (notice the F key), this happens to multiple keys.

I really love this board so far, just that I think these are some aspects that can be improve upon/fix to make it even better, really appreciate any help and thanks in advance!

1:No idea, my xt is smooth. What's the state of your foam? I've washed and soaked my barrels with dish soap before cleaned with a brush. Was your board fully disassembled for cleaning?

2:That's normal with all model F, my 107, at and xt are all like that. Dental floss mod will eliminate most of it.

Hi, thx for the reply. The foam is absolutely fine and still intact, and I've cleaned the barrel already with denture tablet beforehand, although I don't have the patient to cleaning them all one by one with brush, but it shouldn't be the barrel because I've tried larger caps on 1u key position and vice versa while still find the 1u key to be scratchy on off center keys. Also, good the know that the sound is normal on the keyboard, almost impulsively go ahead and buy reproduction spring :P
