I Finally Tried the Shelf Liner Trick
« on: Sat, 09 March 2019, 23:44:13 »
Earlier today, I spilt a coffee and milk mixture on my CM Quickfire TK and was forced to disassemble it for the first time because the spill knocked out the entire home row. Although I've always liked the layout, I'd never particularly liked the keyboard because it has Cherry MX Red switches, which I've found boring, a bit scratchy, and a bit hard to type accurately with. Besides the layout, the one thing I do like about the keyboard is that, after five and a half years, I'd never had any problems with it; it's been my most reliable keyboard.

Anywho, while I had it opened up, I figured I'd practice putting some shelf liner in the case. It was a bit of a pain to do since the plate and PCB are bottom mounted, so there are lots of screw holes and posts and such to cut into the liner. On the other hand, I think being bottom mounted may enhance the experience since the PCB is screwed down against the liner. This mod makes the keyboard feel and sound much nicer. The feel is just softer and more refined, and the sound is much deeper and less "hollow". I think the right side of the keyboard is more effected by it than the left however; this might be because of the raised section in the bottom case where the USB cable mounts, or maybe the cable itself pushes the liner against the PCB harder.

I was surprised the mod works as well as it does. It really transforms the sound and feel of the keyboard in a positive way, and it's really cheap and easy to do. I got mine at Big Lots, but I'm fairly certain this is the same stuff I used (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Con-Tact-Grip-Black-Shelf-Drawer-Liner-04F-C6U51-06/100388906). This is solid liner with no holes in it, and it's a uniform thickness with no bumps or bubbles in it.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.
