Frankensteining Zeal v2's is good
« on: Sun, 23 December 2018, 18:12:13 »
Many people have been getting the Zealio v2's in recent weeks, and they are a great switch IMO. The housing is tighter, the leaf is good, and the stem is more tactile.

The change in the housing/leaf opens up possibilities for frankenswitches, and I've tried a few combinations. Reddit has already talked about Halo stems in them with good results. So here are some combos and my thoughts. These were all done using 67g springs.

-Zealio v1 stem in v2 housing: This was the first one I tried out. Not sure what kind of name these would have (crossbreeding generations...Incestios? jk). Looking at the stems of the two versions you can immediately see they are quite different, and they do feel different in the v2 housing.
Would it make a more tactile v1 style switch? In short, yes. There is a small bit of pre-travel like v1's but the bump is stronger. It might be slighter higher up than stock v1's, but is lower than stock v2's. The bump is also shaped like v1's rather than the new stems, so it is different but strong like the v2. I like it, and will be making a board with these. Maybe this is like what Zandas are.

-Halo stem in v2 housing: Holy Sheißios on reddit apparently. I haven't tried holy pandas yet, but I'm in on both the GBs so I'll get some eventually.  What I can say is that I like this combo. Slightly more tactile than using v1 housings, and more solid feeling. Nice long bump starting at the top, easy to push into without too much resistance at the very beginning. Slightly less pronounced than the stock v2 bump, but shaped differently with a lighter feel. I'd make a board with these now, but gsus housings are coming soon so I'll compare first.

-MX clear stem in v2 housing: I have a couple boards with ergo clears so I thought I'd try those stems here. It basically results in an ergo clear with a crisper and stronger bump. That's an improvement in my book unless you prefer the subtle softness of ergos. I like Outemu skies more than regular ergos, and the clear stem v2's have a little sharper bump. But some may prefer the Outemu sky feel because it's different. Probably want to lube the stem and springs on these, as they made a little more noise than the others for some reason. Higher pitched than skies.

Overall I think v2's are a very good addition to the available switch options, whether as-is or for modding. And they'll be easy to get a hold of for a long time, so that's a plus.

Thanks for the observations! These are insightful.
