Don't Like my Evoluent :(
« on: Sun, 09 May 2010, 11:39:39 »
Friday I (finally) got my new Evoluent mouse. My first impressions are that it's NOT easy to use (or at least that it takes getting used to) and that the scroll wheel sucks. Feels like the ones I used to use 6 years ago.

The main issue (for me) however is that it has an indentation for the thumb, where the thumb is supposed to rest. This makes the upper part of the mouse fairly thin, so the space between the fingers and the thumb is thin. After using it for a few hours, my thumb hurts. I wish it was wider. :(

I think I will order now a Logitech G9x Laser Mouse mainly just because it comes with interchangeable grips and one of them is WIDE. I have big hands and if I must bring my thumb in, it starts to hurt...

I will admit that it clearly will take time to adjust to a sideways orientation, but I think that even if I could adjust, it's still too thin for me.

One reason I think the G9x is better is b/c of your review of the Contour! You mention that the scroll wheel is on the thumb, which indeed sounds stupid to me.

Thanks.

Unless you need the extra DPI of the G9x, you might want to take advantage of this closeout deal at Best Buy on the original G9.  About half original retail.

(EDIT: Whoops -- just realized you're in Israel.  I doubt Best Buy ships overseas...)

Best mouse I've ever used (although I'm currently not using it because ALL mice aggravate the tendinitis in my arm lately.)  My hands measure about 8" from wrist to middle fingertip, and I find the wide grip to be very comfortable.  My only complaint with the design of the G9 is that the button to switch the scroll wheel from frictionless "hyper scrolling" to ratcheted mode is on the bottom of the mouse, so you pretty much have to pick one mode or the other.  Some of the newer Logitech mice have fixed this issue by moving the shift button to the top of the mouse or by making the wheel change modes when you press down on it, but the G9x still has the button on the bottom.

Hey, that's a secret. Well, at least don't tell my boss.

Pity you didn't share this link earlier--my friend is visiting NYC and I already ordered online an expensive G9x. I have no need whatsoever for large DPI.

OK, we'll get a deal next time. ;)

Thanks.

I have to doubt the sanity of anyone who claims the resolution of the G9 is not high enough. The only way I can see to make use of the highest resolution is to use a divider (set software mouse speed low), but even doing that there is no advantage. Being able to move a fraction of a pixel is not very useful.

For precise movements, I seriously think mechanical ball mice are the best.

NO WAY.
When it comes to model M's, I think of them as something old which is better than the average today. However, ball mice is something that got thrown out quite a while ago, for a very good reason.
NO to ball mice!!!!!

(not the only reason, a ball mouse never really feels spot-on)

EDIT: Did you mean a trackball?

I will say that for the most part, I think it's very good that ball mice have gone away.

Like every type of hardware, there have been good examples and bad. The difference between a bad ball mouse and a bad optical mouse? The bad optical mouse is still usable with a minimum level of frustration.

Good ball mice were good...I've got a couple examples of ones which I would agree are quite accurate if you know how to use them (yes, there are right and wrong ways to use a ball mouse, unlike optical mice).

I would agree with this.  Ball mice were the suck.  Even the early, readily available optical mice (e.g. the original MS Explorer) were far better that any ball mouse.

CaptainKirk.
I apologise in advance for diving in with a sales pitch and I promise not to make a habit of it but you should check this Orthomouse.

They're going down a storm with ergonomics people. The scroll has been moved to the thumb on this too, and uses up/down switches so you don't repeat. There is a lot of concern about the long term effect of all that scrolling with a wheel.
The problem you seem to be having is with the grip - which is well addressed on this mouse.

Uh... that's what mouse pads are for, none of my ball mice get clogged up with dust in the rollers: you have to treat ball mice with respect, and they'll respect you back.

I've cleaned out many mouse rollers: I've become quite proficient at it. People get mad and slam the things when they can easily be cleaned with some gentleness. And that looks like an HP-branded logitech mouse. I hate those things.

Ball mice are very good if you use them appropriately and have a decent one. I really like the new IBM ones because they just feel so crisp (they're like any standard red-wheeled IBM mouse, but with a ball and sometimes lack a scroll device depending on the model).

The microsoft ones feel "gummy" to me, and kind of slimy. Very weird plastic.
