[IC] Haku - Top mount 65%
« on: Fri, 17 July 2020, 12:38:40 »
Gonna shelve this for now and try pursuing other ideas that I've been working on for a while.

A long piece would get me a tetris.

Seems cool, GL!

Very interesting layout. Is the led bar a single color or can there be like a gradient?

I would really be feeling this if that led bar was some kind of sliding switch for volume ect. Still looks pretty good

It's capable of whatever QMK lighting effects there are. Rainbow gradient is possible. Not entirely sure abut like a two-tone gradient though.

I have two questions, well potential requests...

Any chance for Alps support (MX/Alps footprints like Leaf60, Key65, AN-C, ai03 Voyager PCBs, etc)? and burger mount PLEASE! This is a perfect layout and fantastic 65% that would be compatible with vintage Alps dyesubs (M0115/M3501 AEK, SGI Granite, Wang 725-3770, Dell AT-101) if the PCB has footprints added.

It's already perfect for vintage Cherry dyesubs, but the Alps compatibility would be the icing on the cake.

Really unique layout and design, good luck and looking forward to hear more about this project :D

BTW, would it be reasonable to suggest making the bezels thicker?

I really like this board! Brings some uniqueness to the 65% area (which seems to have been lacking recently). I do hope this becomes a reality, as it changes up the game and gives a different look that hasn't been introduced before. Good luck with the IC and possible GB!

it's weird but i like it. is there any alignment strips so the top and bottom piece and fit together nicely?

I designed the PCB around MX-only because I figured the number of people using Alps in builds is relatively low. However, I'm not necessarily against having Alps support, would probably have to rework a couple things on the PCB. (also I kind of expected most people would think it would be a "waste" to use Alps switches in a board like this)

As for burger mount, it is already supported. I planned on including the necessary o-rings for it in the kit. It would just be up to the owner to decide how they want to mount it.

is there any alignment strips so the top and bottom piece and fit together nicely?
There are four small alignment pillars (two on the top and two on the bottom) that are used for homing. Wanted to try to make alignment as easy as possible.

BTW, would it be reasonable to suggest making the bezels thicker?
I know there are people who enjoy thick bezels, but I prefer thinner bezels so anything I design will probably reflect that.

Out of curiosity, any insight on why you chose the name Haku? Just wondering if there was some symbolism behind your design besides the engraved weight that says Haku in katakana.

Figured I'd ask because that 2.75U right shift, along with it being WKL, makes it a perfect candidate for Alps. I can always modify the existing plate file and get the appropriate plate cut (~1.2mm POM from Pololu).

Outside of one keyboard, I only have Alps customs (Key65, VE.A, and Leaf60 all have alps switches).

There isn't really some super deep meaning. When I originally started out with the design, I wanted to theme around a dragon and have a dragon logo engraved on the weight, but moved away from that idea and instead opted to name the board after a dragon, allowing me to keep the weight engraving simple.

I like the LED bar, but would you consider removing the 3 indicator LED holes or moving the 3 holes a little closer to the LED bar? Compositionally, it is very close to the right key cluster.

I figured having the indicator holes closer to the left would lead to too much bleeding from the led bar. I spaced them that way, to minimize that issue.

Nice to see something different. Please make this happen.
I shall try.
