I've been caught stealing;
once when I was 5...
I enjoy stealing.
It's just as simple as that.

Anyone else into the punk/indie band Joan of Arc? They have a new song; it's quite good.

Its a sad day when even a classic song from the 80's wont be allowed on youtube without cutting it off after a minute and 40 seconds.  Bastards.  The full version wont allow embedding of course.

I think they really just hurt themselves if they dont allow low-quality versions to be embedded by fans.

That inspired me to look for the theme music from "Never Say Never Again". But of the two versions I saw, I couldn't find one with a decent video.

So I went looking for other songs performed by Lani Hall. I had already found several Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 selections on YouTube, but one of my favorites that I missed was "Like a Lover".

I listened to a few versions of that, and in one I found a comment about the original version of that song.

And I looked up information about the performer, Elis Regina. I found that she was an outspoken opponent of the Brazilian military regime of her time, and that she passed away at a relatively young age from drug abuse.

i never got anything religious out of their lyrics. a whole bunch of "let's fight against social problems because it's the popular thing to do" but not religion :p

you never thought it was odd to hear a kick ass grunge tune about how 'salvation is free'?  I picked up on that right away.  Its not a coincidence, she's deeply catholic in her personal life, started out as a singer in church, is a true believer.
Once i knew that i picked up subtle catholic themes or phrasings in other songs as well. But yea, definitely social reform stuff too of course.

regardless, cranberries kicked ass well enough (and she kicked ass as a powerful and original singer well enough) that it never bothered me too much. If they had sucked it would have bothered me, lol.

Just google for 'dolores o'riordon religious' and you'll see its pretty well known. For instance, here's her pro-life position.

As non religious as I am, when I hear the word salvation, I don't automatically think of salvation through Christ.  I equate it to freeing your mind and letting go of the things in your life that you let weigh you down.  But then again, I did a lot of drugs in college.  Maybe the song is aimed at me :p

I never used to pick up on cues like that until I dated my evangelical g/f for 3 years. Suddenly when i began to see the world (including pop culture) thru her eyes and got to know her filters, I realized how much cues like that actually mean for different demographics in our society.  For instance, come to think of it, my first cue about dolores' religiosity was actually the fact that my evang g/f would play the cranberries all the time, and I knew that she was generally against pop culture and pop music, so i figured there had to be a christian connex for her to be 'okay' with dolores.

I think I strongly associate certain songs with women or moments in time. Everytime i hear cranberries' "dreams" i'm transported to my evangelical g/f's dorm room and to one snuggle-session in particular. ;)  It was playing in the background and now she's permanently associated with it. So is that room, that moment in time.

I also associate cranberries' "promises" with this really cute asian chic i met at harvard once. I'm always reminded of her when I hear it. We didnt go out or anything but i was fascinated by her and that was the same weekend I bought the cranberries 'best of' cd at a used cd shop in harvard square.

I don't ever remember what else was going on while I was ****ing.  Call me "focused."

I consider listening to music a task.  I hate when people are talking while I'm trying to listen to music.

Any pink floyd is pretty good background music for love making. Also bluesy stuff. I've had SRV work out pretty well for that. [It was the second side of Texas Flood, IIRC. Yea, an LP].

Nice.

A friend of mine is a great player and mentioned Stanley Jordan once, saying I had to check him out.  Less than a month later I was testing a few DVD players from Fry's; both were open box returns.  Someone had left Stanley Jordan - Live in Montreal in one of them, so I put it on.  I watched the entire thing right there, just floored.

Listening to some Chris Potter tonight.

Pretty awesome bass clarinet solo (!) at 6:20:
