Just Bough the Polaris!
« on: Fri, 30 August 2019, 09:11:40 »
So I just bought a polaris, and im pretty happy about it. This will be my first build, and I am wondering what suggestions people have. I am not sure what switches I would like to use, and my assumption is that it is a mx board, correct me if I'm wrong. I dont have any equipment either, so suggestions on high quality equipment would be appreciated, including oil or lubricant. My questions right now would be: can i use alps switches on this board? What keycap profiles work on this board? What are good linear switches right now, or good old ones?

Don't you think _before the buy_ would be the better time to ask these questions?  :)

But hey, just take a look around the forum, there's plenty of conversations on building, switches and keycaps that can inform your decisions.

The Reddit MK community is another great source: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/cxeu4p/rmechanicalkeyboards_what_keyboard_switches_andor/

Why don't you ask these questions in the Polaris GB thread instead of starting multiple threads here about it...

No need to be short with OP, just tell him politely to take it to a different thread.

OP, these two folks do have a point thought: the Polaris thread is probably the best place to ask. As for questions about equipment, this forum has lots of answers if you take a peek around; the wiki has some good stuff too. If you want to ask questions in a more informal setting, try out our IRC or Discord channels (usually people are pretty good at answering if you ask the right questions :). Also... killer GB to kick off the hobby with! Good luck

Maybe buy a switch tester so you can try all the different kinds of switches and buy a cheap PCB so you can practice soldering.
People I've given money to from this webform who never respond to me and have not shipped me anything: ctrlalt.io 1 2, Team Readline Reputable alternatives to GH group buys: http://pimpmykeyboard.com, https://www.massdrop.com,

Try linears, tactiles. Choose one, if you like linears use inks if you like tactiles, get zealios or holy pandas. Then choose lube, if using linear use 205g0, if using tactile use 3203 or 3204. Now find useless switches, and solder them into a useless pcb, to practice soldering. Search gmk or enjoypbt for the best keycaps on the market right now. Custom cables are availiable everywhere. Pexon cables for EU or summitcables for NA. Have fun
