MX Clear vs White tactility?
« on: Tue, 28 January 2020, 12:41:49 »
Hi everyone,
Looking at both clear and white switches. I had tried both mx browns and kalih box browns, didn't like either of those. People told me the box browns would be more tactile, but I didn't really find that to be the case.

I have some box jades, which I like a good amount.

Now I'm wondering about clears vs whites. I understand whites click clears don't, but what matters most to me is the tactility. Which of the 2 feel more tactile? Probably clear? Do clears feel much more tactile than browns? Don't want another mushy linear-like 'tactile'.

Thanks!

IMO, all of the Cherry tactile/click options pale in comparison to Kailh box, especially the thick click series (jade and navy). I haven't tried cherry white, but clears have a big rounded bump. When I first tried them they were too heavy for me. In the days before box switches existed I modded myself some ergo clears and soldered them into a keyboard. They were probably the best type of Cherry switch I've tried, but as I implied once I tried box jade, I'm not going back to any type of Cherry switch.

Modded Cherry MX Clear, also known as Ergo Clear, will be more tactile than normal Cherry MX Brown. They are presumed to feel like Zealios v1. Cherry MX White are similar to MX Green (google research) so in terms of tactility...

The only Box Tactile I liked was the Royal, it has a shocking amount of tactility. It's eventual slight and intermittent clicking as well as the initial stem cracking issue with my first gen switches had led me to replace them. That slight click might be a feature if Cherry Whites are on your list. It might be made consistent if the factory lubrication was completely cleaned off.

Cherry Clears, Outemu Silent Sky, SKCM Dampened Cream Alps and Jailhouse Blues (an MX style clicky switch stem and click jacket modification) are my preference for tactile switches along with odd combination of Kailh Halo True housings and springs with Outemu v2.2 tactile stems. They all have a light-ish initial press, shorter, sharper tactile bump mid to high in the key press with a dampened bottom out.

Sorry, I haven't tried Cherry Whites for a direct comparison.

Yeah, I'm typing this right now on some box jades and I do like them. However, the keyboard I'm looking to buy only comes with mx variants... so I'm trying to find what I would like best out of those.

In terms of preference. I like a heavier switch. I smash my keys and always bottom out.  I like the tactility to be at or near the top. I could take or leave the click, because I get enough sound with my keys smashing into the plate/bottoming out.

I guess at this point im between the whites and the clears. I've already googled for a while and have been unable to come to a concensus on which of the two people tend to like more.

Clears are more tactile than browns, but the tactility is pretty different than with a Box Jade - the tactile bump is more spread out and less concentrated than with most clicky switches, which have very sharp and short tactile bumps.

I like typing documents with Clear since the tactility is satisfying. I don't feel Browns' tactility at all when I type, probably since my normal keypresses are pretty hard. I got some Zealios 65g switches recently, and I find these to have a weaker, but still noticeable, tactile bump while offering resistance between Browns and Clears.

I like medium weight switches with medium tactility. Linears are OK, but I don't like light tactiles. Tactiles can't be super tactile either, otherwise they ruin the feel. Take the example of white Alps. They are heavy switches, with very heavy tactility. They are cool at first, but they get boring quickly. Blue Alps are a better version of these switches, because they have a medium weight with less tactility, but the tactility feels more rounded and refined. This is the feel that I am looking for. :) Hope that helps you guys find your switches.

Just realized I told you about my preferences. The best way to know what switches you like is to buy a hotswap board and try out heavy, light and medium variants of switches, for example, Box White, and Pale Blue. If you don't like the low tactility, you could use more tactile switches such as Navy or Jade. If you like medium tactility, in between, you could pick Box Pink! :)

The point of my long post was to find something that YOU like, not something that others like. Not everyone likes Holy Pandas, and not everyone likes MX Clear.

Thanks everyone for the input.
I ended up going with the mx whites which arrived today. I think I like them, but i also think I will need to get used to them. They are quieter, but also "stiffer" and "mushier" at the same time (if that makes any sense) than the jades in a way.. though they still feel pretty nice to type on... and they are quieter than the jades also. So I think I got what I was looking for? They still don't blow me out of the water, but I think I'll keep this keeb and see how I like it after some more getting used to it.

I think overall it's been quite the journey trying to find switches that I like, because in the long run I don't know exactly what I want. I like too many different characteristics that it's almost impossible to tell how I'm going to like a switch based on a written description of the feel. I've just been ordering different keebs and returning them (to amazon) if I don't like them... because I refuse to buy a switch tester lol.. I always think that next purchase will be the perfect one. But as soon as I purchase one type of switch, I'm immediately interested in trying a switch with a completely different set of characteristics... "o0o maybe I'de like a stiff linear?!"

At this point I think you're right in that my best option is to buy a hot-swap board and go from there. I'm looking hard at the massdrop ctrl or alt with some zealio's right now... eventually I can turn my 3 other mech keebs into projects where I de-solder them and re-solder with my 'dream switches' that I find later down the road.

I appreciate everyone's time and consideration in responding to my post!

I got a Drop CTRL high profile, and I like it a lot. Good luck in your continued hunt for your perfect switch! It's quite the hobby we all have here.
