Compaq Rt101 questions
« on: Wed, 26 January 2011, 11:08:11 »
Hey Guys,

Have another stray keyboard that came wondering into the shop today... Anyone ever seen one like this?
Correct me if I am wrong but is that white Alps?

Keyboard has a cool feel to it... Quite enjoyable to type on....

Thanks!

My old Quietkey had those too, with the exact same plunger design. Rather decent rubber domes.

My unicomp goes as high as 8KRO, but it's not for gaming, as some critical key combinations more than 3 keys fail.

Do you man it's "s high as" 8 key rollover, or that usually it's about 2-3, and for rare occasions it's 8. The reason I ask is because getting a membrane keyboard to be more than 2KRO is really difficult. You need variable resistance traces (or whatever the sidewinder uses) or a flexible PCB and diodes (I want to try this sometime) or some other crazy solution.

Active or passive converter?

Does anyone know whether for this keyboard (RT101 from Compaq) I need an ACTIVE PS2-USB converter or can I just use a passive one?

Is there a way to tell with any (old) keyboard?

I have one and I prefer typing on it

8 year necro? I'm not certain, but I have had keyboards much newer than this that did not work with passive adapters. I think the goldilocks zone is somewhere in the early 2000s, and maybe late 90s for those passive adapters. There's basically no reason to get the passive ones. Do you just happen to have one lying around?
