Another keyboard help thread.

I got the Compaq 11800 to test what the browns feel like. Holy crap. I love the browns! But I was wondering if there was another low-cost keyboard I could get that has blues or blacks in them to try them out.

As for a trip report, the browns are working so far for gaming and for typing (plus I really love the built-in mouse on it). I pulled a few keys and noticed the space bar is grey. Interesting.... As for the type of gaming I do, FPS, RPG, and good ol' Door games. I don't notice anything different from my domes performance-wise, but it feels damn comfy. I'm not by any stretch a good touch typist so I bottom out. Sometimes when doing menu browsing, I hit the keys kinda hard to hear them be loud, hence why I want to try blues first. I don't know why I do that.

My problem with the 11800 is that the INS/DEL/HOME/END keys are faaaar, or at least not where my brain and fingers expect to find them... that's quite a pain for typing.

I've only had it for a bit more than a week, and I also have a hard time not bottoming out.
I'm a heavy typer (typist ?), so I guess it's still the learning curve.
Not bottoming out was easier on blacks though... problem is they do hurt my fingers in the long run.

As for cheap blues, you can search eBay for G80-3000LSxxx, as they are the most common.
Won't probably be as cheap as a 11800 though.

Egad! The only one up there was 66 dollars! I wish Filco offered numpads with blues or blacks in them.

$66.25 is what geminicomputers.com charge. If they don't have it in stock, you can get them to custom order them. That's what I did the last time. They won't charge you more for the special order.

I couldn't even see one on the site. What is the exact model number i should send them if I do a special order?

I forgot to mention that this one has the Chinese characters on the keys together with the Western alphabet. If you touch type, this should not be a problem.

I like the brown cherry switches. They are, like Cherry advertised, definitely low force switches.

Your shift key(s) seems also to be broken...

More seriously, if you have a (real) problem, it's better to create your own thread instead of hijacking one that seems to pertain to the same problem you have (as it doesn't seem you want to buy some low-cost keyboards with MX blacks, for instance).

And in that new thread of yours, remember to actually give details on your keyboard, like the brand, the model... (should be on a sticker on the back of the keyboard).

Hey everythings all good on my end, the way I see it this thread got free bumps.

I still can't justify 68 dollars for something I'm just using to see if I'll like the switches. How does keyboard loaning or swapping work?

As soon as you'll find a way to justify it, you'll be hooked for good to GeekHack :wink:

Never heard about keyboard loaning, but depending on where you live, you can see if there's some brick and mortar in your vicinity that has some of those keyboards (Adesso, iRocks and the likes, for instance) available to try.

You can also find out if there's some GH members nearby wherever you are, willing to let you run your fingers on their sacred keyboards.

Lastly, you can find online stores with "your money back within x days no question asked" policies, so you could just buy what you need, and if it doesn't appeal to you, you send it back.

Haha perhaps I worded that weird. If I was ready to drop so much on a keyboard I have no idea if I'll like, I aught as well go with a Filco.

Strangely enough, I somehow doubt that there'd be any geekhackers near Washington state...

True. I have the G80-3000 and I love it. I bought a "spare" one too. And both cost me on average CDN$95 each because of exchange rate and shipping.
