Can a DELL AT101W marry an IBM Model M?
« on: Tue, 27 July 2010, 21:36:01 »
I have a IBM Model M that has been my daily keyboard since 2001, but recently my father found a Black DELL AT101W. Now I am stuck! I love the clicky of the Model M but I love the STEALTH of the black DELL AT101W.

Can I put the Model M inside of the case of the black DELL AT101W?

or maybe something that I can get the best of both worlds?

Thanks

Bryan

IBM Model M13.  They are usually $50-120 on ebay and a few show up per month.  None are listed right now.  The bonus is you get a trackpoint built in.

Considering they were fetching $250-300 a couple of years ago, recent prices on them are pretty rock bottom.  I sold one for around $90 that was near mint.  That price vs. trying to stuff a Model M into a AT101W is a much better option and more realistic.  Or just dye your Model M and it's keys black.

Search this site for RIT Dye...   Model M Keys dye very easily, and Rustoleum Industrial Spray Enamel works well on the cases, no special instructions beyond a regular spray paint job.   I'd also recommend RIT for the keycaps with black Plasti-Dip (another search on this site will yield lots of results for plast-dip)

Some say that the Vinyl Dye (which is a spray) found at autoparts stores will get absorbed into the case better than paint. I haven't tried it yet myself.

If you use a quality paint and clean the plastic well beforehand, the paint I mentioned above works exceptionally well.  You don't NEED a dye to absorb if you lay down a quality coat of paint, and do the prep work right. :)

Also, keep in mind that the vinyl "dye", which is really just a paint with really aggressive solvents that melt the plastic allowing the paint to adhere better, is actually more dangerous to the plastic.  accidentally lay it on too thick and your rugged model m case turns to saggy soft plastic...  granted it will strengthen back up once the solvents flash off, but it's a more dangerous method for doing the same thing, put a coat of paint on a plastic case  (accidentally touch or bump the board while flashing and the plastic is marred, drop something on it and it will likely fracture)

I like plasti-dip because it's EASY to reverse... once it is fully cured, it can be peeled off like sunburned skin! mm!
