[IC] ePBT Creative Studio - [2021-04-06] Minor Update
« on: Wed, 10 March 2021, 13:56:35 »

Introducing ePBT Creative Studio, a keycap set inspired by and featuring sublegends for your favourite creative tools. The set comprises dark grey alpha keys and two themed modifiers sets: a sky blue and navy PS theme, and an orange and maroon AI theme. ISO-UK is supported in the base alphas kit, and NorDe support provided via an extension kit. An extensive Nomad kit provides support for 40% and ortholinear keyboard layouts when paired with either alphas kit.

Changelog

2021-04-06
I don't currently have the time to update my renders, but a future update will make a few changes which were proposed by folks on here (most notably, I'll be removing F keys from the neutral modifiers kit, since these are duplicated across the base alpha kits). For those who have been asking when they'll get to see this in group buy: first of all thank you sincerely for your enthusiasm! It's genuinely exciting to see my design get such a reception. As yet EnjoyPBT haven't been in a position to quote for the sets, and since I'm moving house soon this has become something of a lower priority. As soon as I've moved (and have working internet again!) I will be back to focusing on getting this to the group buy stage.

2021-03-16
By popular demand, I’ve added two new kits: a Neutral Modifiers kit with all-grey modifiers, and a sublegend-less Alphas kit.

2021-03-15
Thank you to everyone for the really enthusiastic response, and the many helpful suggestions and observations. I’ve been working hard to make changes to try and address the most common bits of feedback, and have updated the kitting images accordingly:

  • Substantially reworked Modifiers and Modern kits; all modifiers are icon-based now, and as a result the Modern kit has shrunk (since a lot of keys would otherwise have been duplicated)
  • Removed media key sublegends from the F-row keys in the Modifier kits, and added their equivalents to the Modern kits.
  • Added F-row keys to to Alphas kit to permit alternating F-row colours (if you like that)
  • Added an extra B key to the Alphas kit to support Alice users (and removed it from Nomad kits)
  • Moved some Mac-specific keys from Alphas to Modern kits
  • Added tilde and pipe keys to both modifier sets
  • Changed Numlock key to be an icon modifier in the Numpad kits
  • Merged the two NorDe kits into a single kit with both mod colours; also, replaced AltGr with a new icon legend
  • Substantially reworked the Nomad kits to better support 40s users. Too many changes to list, but hopefully you’ll see something more to your liking if you’re a 40% user and want to pick up just the alphas and nomad kits
  • Substantially revisited the Novelties kits. A lot of people raised concerns about the Ai and Ps icon novelties, and I’ve taken the decision to remove these to ensure the kit won’t have any legality issues. I’ve also changed many of the 1U novelties in each kit to be more app-specific.

I like it. Is it possible to add another 2u spacebar to the nomad kits? And about the nomad kits, is compatible too with ortho or just staggered?

I feel like you can make your kits a lot smaller since most of the alt kits are the same but with a couple of different colored keys, for example norde and numpad, I don't see any difference in the Norde kits other than the 3 keys on the bottom, so maybe offering those 3 keys in a different kit so that people that want both colors dont get most of the norde kit duplicated, your numpad has basically the same issue, other than that glwic!

If only there was one for Lightroom and XD...but regardless I love this concept! Since I use both extensively, I was wondering if it was possible to make another kit that is a combination of both. I don't know how well that would look, but if it doesn't I don't mind buying individual kits depending on the price.

Hi, I suggest some changes to your base kit, about ISO keys, since you reverse the row order of cherry profile, i'm gonna go with your row order. I don't really know about any layouts that use a R3 1u "\|" key, if it's for ISO, I recommend moving this key to you R2 so your base kit can cover both US and UK ISO (US Iso only need a R2 "\|" key).

A couple quick observations:

- Two UK-only keys (#~ and '@)  are present in the Norde kits.

- 1U R3 \| makes little sense, given that the rest of the keys required for a 14.5U alpha block are absent.

- For that matter, move the 1U R3 \| key to R2, move the R1 <> key from the Norde kits to the base kit and with that you'll have full English (USA) over ISO support.

- The Macintosh-specific alphas (R4 §± and R1 `~) are out of place as well, given no explicit Mac support is given (outside the icon-only modifiers).

Thank you everyone for the really great feedback. There are some great suggestions here, and I’ll be making tweaks to the kitting to support everyone as best as is practical! I’ll try to answer related questions together:

can the norde kits be combined?

I feel like you can make your kits a lot smaller since most of the alt kits are the same but with a couple of different colored keys, for example norde and numpad, I don't see any difference in the Norde kits other than the 3 keys on the bottom, so maybe offering those 3 keys in a different kit so that people that want both colors dont get most of the norde kit duplicated

I’ve received this feedback from a few people, so I will investigate amalgamating the mods from both the NorDe and Numpad kits into just two single kits.

ne b in base avail

Would be great to have a "B" key in spacebars kits for anyone who use alice layout instead buying Norde kits just for the "B" key

There’s an extra B in the Nomad kit(s) for Alice layout, but I’m going to revisit the kitting for Nomad to make it easier to support 40% layouts, and make it simpler for Alice users to create a workable layout, either with the modifier kit alone, or with the modifer + spacebar kits. Most likely just by adding an extra B key to the base kit.

I think there’s an error on my part; one of the \| keys is to support ISO-UK Mac, but that should be R2 rather than R1. This might seem like a particularly niche layout to support, but it’s what I use so I wanted to ensure it was covered (there are some other slightly unusual keys in the base kit that are for this layout, like ±§). (The row ordering is confusing to me too but apparently that’s how EnjoyPBT does their numbering, so I’ve stuck with it).

I would like to see mod pipe in the mod kits.

No mod pipe or tilde... Looks cool, but I'd have to use another set with mods I want to match it.

I’ll add both of these to the modifier kits!

Commented earlier but feel I would need to ask - will there be any issues regarding IP / copyrights running this?

IANAL but this has been asked a few times, specifically with regard to one of the novelties. All of the icon artwork is my own, but I’ll let an actual lawyer make a final call on whether I need to remove/alter any of the novelties before production.

- Two UK-only keys (#~ and '@)  are present in the Norde kits.

I think this was a mistake on my part; I’ll move these into the base kit, since the intention is for that to have ISO-UK support.

- 1U R3 \| makes little sense, given that the rest of the keys required for a 14.5U alpha block are absent.

As I mentioned above, I think this was a mistake on my part: it should be a 1U R2 \| key, for ISO-UK Mac support.

move the R1 <> key from the Norde kits to the base kit and with that you'll have full English (USA) over ISO support.

That seems reasonable, so I’ll look into doing that.

The Macintosh-specific alphas (R4 §± and R1 `~) are out of place as well, given no explicit Mac support is given (outside the icon-only modifiers).

I might not have made it explicit (and perhaps I should!) but I’m definitely seeking to support Mac users here, given how there’s a strong overlap with the creative community there.

Love the font, the execution, the modifiers, and the presentation. Too bad I only use Lightroom...

If only there was one for Lightroom and XD...but regardless I love this concept! Since I use both extensively, I was wondering if it was possible to make another kit that is a combination of both. I don't know how well that would look, but if it doesn't I don't mind buying individual kits depending on the price.

If this set is a success I would definitely be looking to follow up with other members of the Creative Suite family. As far as combination kits go, I did consider this at first (an early version had orange mods on one side, blue on the other) but it’s a little tricky to scratch everyone’s itch. My hope is that the pricing will be attractive enough that people can pick up a couple of mod kits and mix and match to their tastes.

The modular design makes it a very cost-efficient buy—also, the inclusion of UK-support in the base adds-up to its efficiency. Last; but not least, the colors, the icons, and the overall design of the kits are great. Kudos to the designer.

edit: The Norde set could be just one. The AltGr keys could be moved to the corresponding color, or offered as a separated kit.

Love the colours, great work. My only suggestion at this point is to have a non-Apple F-row. As it is now, you have icons for the Apple specific functions (brightness, mission control etc.) It would be good to see a F-row without those for those users who aren't using Apple computers.

Very cool idea, i think the Norde AI Accents should be in the Norde PS kit too bc i dont know if they both hit MOQ so i would just combine them.

FWIW ePBT don’t have an MOQ for child kits so there’s no issue with that, but nonetheless this has been consistent feedback so I think I would be wise to combine them!  :thumb:

This might be the nicest looking ePBT set I've seen to date, and I think it absolutely does the theme justice. Wishing you the best of luck with this IC.  :thumb:

This is a really nice set! Would be all in if you include a grey mods kit.

I prefer a more subtle look and the orange/blue of the mods is a bit too harsh for me, although it suits the theme perfectly.

GLWIC!

Super pumped for this! I think for 40's kit, its missing the 1u CAPS lock and the " ' alpha key in mods color (for preonic and planek to match the grids.

Any plans for blanks for more compatibility?

Also no eraser icon for novelties?  :(

Get AI and PS both when this hits GB.
You don't wanna pick only one and then regrets not picking up the other.

As a graphic designer that uses both of these Creative Studio, thanks for making this set!

There's been quite a bit of feedback regarding the 40s support from the Nomad kit, so I'm planning on revisiting this assuming there's enough interest in supporting 40% layouts. What would be great is for more people who are definitely interested in buying this to use on a 40% board to complete the survey and indicate they'd buy the Nomad kit, even if it does need some alterations to support their specific needs, that way I know it's going to actually sell!

Also no eraser icon for novelties?  :(

I might revisit the novelties since the pathfinder novelties are very Illustrator-specific, which may give an opportunity to do more Photoshop-specific ones in that kit.

The character legends are out of place along with the other icon mods. They may be moved into an independent set and the icons bottom row into the modifiers one.

If an icon-free-alpha base kit is offered, I would take both sets.

Edit: The function row in the base color does not make sense, as it is not a full row and it is redundant with the function row in the mod-sets.

This has now been added  :)

Edit: The function row in the base color does not make sense, as it is not a full row and it is redundant with the function row in the mod-sets.

Stylistically I prefer all F-row keys to be the same colour, whereas some others prefer to have alternating modifier and alpha coloured F-row keys. To accommodate both, the easiest thing to do was add the F-row keys to the alphas kit, and keep modifier-coloured ones in the mod kits. That way people can choose how to build the F-row out.

Love the design, one of the best ePBT set I've ever seen! This might be one of those kits that I might actually get all of the variants.

Will there be a Numpad Neutral and Modern Neutral kit, since there's a Modifiers Neutral Kit? I really think these are a must for those who have boards larger than 75%, for those productivity users such as myself. Hoping that you would add them to the pool of kits.  ;D

Any chance we could get 1.5U Supers and 1U Alts in the neutral mod kit? Or maybe you could add a neutral version of the Modern kits? I feel like a lot of Creative Suite users are using a Mac, so coverage for 7U bottom row with swapped mods seems like a natural addition.

Also wanted to state that I love the overall design of this set! The additions of the neutral sets are much appreciated.

The only piece of feedback I have--and it may be very minor--is that the legend design of the Enter key clashes with the rest. Most/all key legends are angular with the exception of the Enter key which uses a curved arrow design. I think there would be more consistency if the Enter key's legend design was also angular, but that's just my two cents!

Now that you point this out I also can't unsee, the rest of the mod legends are very angular and totally clashes the curve of the Enter.

Will buy regardless tho

I actually think it fits well. The other sharp angles are all less than 90 degrees so the curved look wouldn't make sense there.

Seriously. *THIS* is my jam.
I am gonna cop every single kit and mat in this set!

If possible, please keep adding more to the novelties kit! I can see so many variations for macropads happening with everyone's flavour of shortcuts to use.
Otherwise, I just very much love this set!!

I think the point is that the angular design of the rest of the mods are nice already, and so the singular curve on the enter is the odd one out

I've been reading this topic with some interest! It’s an interesting one, but I personally don’t feel like the rounded tail on the enter symbol is inconsistent. There are quite a few other modifier symbols that have rounded elements, particularly the Command symbol for Mac, and the lock symbols (Num Lock and Layer Lock, the latter of which is only in the Nomad kit). At one point there was a different symbol on the 1u backspace key in the Nomad kit, as I had misinterpreted this as being akin to a ‘back’ button in a browser (the default GMK legend in my template just has the word 'Back'), and this also had a rounded hook on the end. Ultimately it comes down to personal taste to a degree, and so I’ve opted for a certain look that I think works well, but hopefully enough others like it too.

Yep this definitely nitpicking something that already looks great and will do very well! Thanks again for putting in a neutral mods kit!

Is a modern-neutral-set missing?

The full icon mod sets are very welcome, and the neutral sets, as well; however, a modern-neutral may be needed by those that choose a neutral theme for their sets. Another option may be to include command keys in the neutral modifiers set.

I didn’t update the IC form with the changes to the kitting (and addition of new kits), since the changes were quite substantial. The important thing is that unlike some manufacturers there’s no MOQ for individual kits with EnjoyPBT so all of the sets listed on the IC should be made regardless of how many responses they get. Mostly the IC form is a tool for me to gauge interest in a particular idea. I’m not averse to adding additional kits to the survey but at this point it would be hard to reconcile the fact they were absent from the survey when most people responded, sadly!

Oh that's perfectly ok. It's my first time approaching an IC or GB at all, so I was just asking out of curiosity not knowing whether it was intentional or not. I'll register my interest using the scheme that I like the most out of the available then. Thanks for clarifying.

Those that get the neutral-mod set will pay for duplicated function rows. The neutral function row could be moved to a separate kit that may be bought by anyone that needs it.

Yes; I think looking at how the kitting works right now the better option would be to just remove function keys from the neutral modifier kit. Since those are included with both alphas kits, it’s probably unnecessary for them to be included in any other kit (since who needs function keys but doesn’t have any alphas keys?)

Indeed! But the opposite (needing F keys but not alphas) isn't really a thing (unless somebody is making a macropad that just has F keys, maybe?)

EnjoyPBT weren't in a position to quote at the point I reached out to them, and since I'm in the process of moving house I've been happy to let this sit idle for a little while. As soon as they are ready to quote I will update with all the information here. Several vendors have been in touch so I'm looking forward to sharing details and hopefully get a group buy date in front of people. Obviously no promises at this point, but I'd like to think it should be possible before the middle of the year!

I've been reading this topic with some interest! It’s an interesting one, but I personally don’t feel like the rounded tail on the enter symbol is inconsistent. I am a bit late in responding, but I appreciate the direct reply regarding the discussion! At the end of the day, I do think it is a very nuanced design choice. And, although I would personally prefer an angled Enter key, you are ultimately the creator and artist of this wonderful keycap set. It's also not going to stop me from picking one up if a group buy comes into fruition!

The spirit of an IC is for the OP to get the community's feedback, and for the community to decide if they want to join the GB, eventually. It is the OP's choice to change or keeps the design's features.

I'm not sure I understand why that has to do with it. Currently, anyone needing F keys will also get a full F set with their modifiers, so shouldn't they be taken out of alphas to reduce cost? It makes more sense to remove them from alphas rather than the neutral mods.

There’s two ways of cutting down on duplication: removing them from the alphas kits, or the neutral mods kit. The former would mean anybody who wants to have an F row consisting of alternating colour blocks of 4 F keys (which seems popular) would need to buy an alphas kit, a neutral modifiers kit and a modifier kit in their chosen colour. It would make the alphas kit cheaper for all those who only care about alphas, or intend to use the same colour for all their F keys (but arguably it shouldn’t make a price difference to them: the kits will likely end up having the same approximate combined price).

The alternative, of removing the F keys from the neutral modifier kit simplifies things: everyone who wants to use neutral F keys gets them in base. Anyone who wants either colour, or alternating F keys, can add a modifier kit. The only downside is for people who don’t care about F keys at all for whom this will inflate the price of the alpha kit somewhat.

Both ways involve moving costs from one group of users to another, it’s just a question of which will hurt which group most. Until I have a quote it’s hard to judge how bad it is, but I’ll be making the final call based on the survey result which should hopefully give an indication of how I should finalise the kits.

I understood since previous OP's posts that he likes to have function keys that match alphas, which, in this case, are in neutral colors. That is the main reason why both alpha sets carry a whole function row and what justifies their removal from the neutral mods. An independent function row set can be bought separately, making happy most of the GB's joiners and the OP, but the OP has the last word.

Ah I understand now, I didn't consider the alternating F keys, as I was thinking that everyone who bought the mods would have one of each F key. I know some sets made the alternating colors mandatory like Kat mizu (https://cannonkeys.com/products/gb-kat-mizu?variant=31991361601647), or Nautilus (https://omnitype.com/products/gmk-nautilus-2-keycap-set).

I think the demographic who strongly prefers full or alternate mods might be much smaller than people who would rather prefer cheaper alphas, but survey is the best way to know as you said. If number of kits are no object, it could go in its own, or into the modern kit or something. But like Ideus said, it's ultimately up to you.

I’ll have a think about the F keys, it's clearly a bit more nuanced than I initially thought. There are some other options so I guess I can explore those too.

I sort of hate to do this but I feel the need to ask the question again. Will there be a modern neutral kit as well? As many other pointed out it's a must have for those who will go for that theme.

Apologies for not replying more directly! My original opinion was to offer it if enough people asked for it, but since there’s no MOQ on non-base kits I suspect it should be fine to add anyway. My computer and desk are all packed up in boxes right now so I’ll probably not be moving this further along for a week or more, but my intention is to pick up the thread in mid/late April.

Hi Kapowaz, I owe an apology in case I sounded harsh or pushy, I didn't mean to come across that way nad thanks a ton for the useful update in such a stressful and busy time like a house move. I really hope the neutral can be squeezed in eventually, more now I wish you all the best for everything and we will all eagerly wait for you to come back to normality. Cheers.

Really cool idea, and great execution.

I want to remark especially on the icons; you managed to get fresh, non-standard icons that are not "overdone". Outside of some specific sets of Cherry-style icons, I don't think I've come across an icon-only mod kit that I'd actually be happy looking at.

My only suggestion is to consider using the more line-centric Command/Apple logo for the default command/win key; the stroked version goes better with the other stroked icons, IMO. Either way, that icon seems like it's a bit too big, and could get sized down a 1-2mm
