That's true, but the heavy use of "other" in the previous poll seems to indicate that too many of us are exactly that.

And the problem is that the forum, as it is set up, only allows 10 categories at a time. So the previous poll was more balanced, but "other" got almost half the answers, and several categories got very few responses.

But another thing is that most people listen to multiple genres, not one.

So, you just choose one that is!

If I confined myself to one genre, I'd be a very dull person, musically.

This is true, so that's why I phrased the question differently.

However, I think that this is a question that just can't be adequately dealt with by using just 10 categories, no matter what, so maybe the poll will need to be split into multiple polls. One major poll for the major category, and then individual polls for more detailed categories.

Perhaps I should compile a playlist of all the music I listen to (but since some formats are not support in winamp, I'd have to make it by hand).

What the hell is "Light Classics"? I hope that's not referring to Easy Listening / Elevator Music crap. I don't want to be voting for that.

I'd rather divide it like "Late Classical (from Gallant to Modern)" and "Early Classical (Baroque and earlier)". I'd also add an "Electronic / Techno" option. (...to the poll, not the Classical category... picturing Bach rocking out on a Moog synthesizer...)

Light classic is a well recognized category if you listen to Classical.

I've listened to Classical music for 20 years, done lots of research, but the only place "Light Classic" is a well recognized category is in the bargain bin of a music "blowout sale" or radio stations that play "easy listening" rubbish.

And movies provide some of the most beautiful music in the world...

Yes, you're certainly right there. (though I don't know what video you linked because I can't see it)

Unfortunately, most of the best movie composers are dead, replaced with second-rate hacks churning out bland formula-based music. Either that, or they fill movies with the latest crap hit songs so that they don't even have to get a good movie composer (and they sell more soundtracks).

I think I like renaissance a little more than baroque (which is goes against me since renaissance doesn't have as much harpsichord solos). I think I need more music of both periods to make a better based opinion. Have a little sympathy however, all the atrocious mainstream music today makes it exceedingly difficult to find anything good. It washes all the good stuff under a deep, deep deep dark rock.

If I'm not mistaken, Bach chose the harpsichord/lute harpsichord over the piano (even though there were pianos in his day). Or at least fortepianos.

I quite realize that, and I was the first to note that the main problem was being allowed only ten choices.

I thought, though, that using the benefit of hindsight, I could concentrate more specifically on the genres most of interest to participants in this group, by omitting the ones that didn't get many votes in your poll.

What the hell is "Light Classics"?

Light Classical is a subset of the standard repertoire. Think of the works of Suppé, or the Turkish Rondo by Mozart, the William Tell Overture, or Strauss waltzes such as the Blue Danube... essentially, "Light Classics" are the most recognizable and overused portions of the classical repertoire, of interest even to people who are not quite prepared to sit through more serious classical music.

Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance march No. 1 (source of the song "Land of Hope and Glory") might also be suggested as an example.

I'm not sure if this counts as a light classic; it probably should, but it might instead be in the category of sacred music.

Ages ago, my mother was watching a soap opera on television, and the wedding of two of the major characters was shown. Naturally, it was a beautiful wedding, and there was a performance of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" on handbells. I considered it quite beautiful, and this clip is the closest thing I've found to it.

I played virtually all MIDIs back in the day with OPL3, it's my favourite. PC 300 (1997/1998) had it onboard. Then they "upgraded" to ESS allegro, blah.

The only problem with the Yamaha DX9 is that the choir patches, one of which being 103 (I think the other one is like 63 or something), are so quiet they're never heard. They got everything right except that.

While we're on the topic of video games for the Commodore 64, I happened to stumble across this video. Apparently, a musical group called "8-bit Weapon" performs reconstructions of the theme music from many Commodore-64 games, this one being "Action Kitty in Space".

I have to approve of the video clip which the video creator chose to accompany the music.
