Did Model M Space Saver bottom labels come laminated? Or is that something someone added on somewhere done the line? Every one I've seen had a clear plastic sticker over it.

I have 3 Model Ms and they all have a thin plastic laminate over their Birth Certificates.

Ones made by IBM Mexico and the US did. The Greenock ones didn't, neither did the Lexmark ones.

Interesting, I've got a '93 Lexmark one that is laminated.

Depends. Some early ones were laminated. Most of them were like this -

Seems like after 1993 (ie. '94 and on) they stopped laminated 'em.

I would guess from all the pics I've seen online, Model Ms prior to '94 all came laminated.

One of the many corners Lexmark cut.  Though it doesn't affect it's performance, it's annoying.  But it's much less annoying than the horrible flat wire, fixed cables they eventually started using.

It's interesting to note that they switched back to round cables later on, albeit without coils.

I wonder why they bothered with SDL cables to begin with...

They prob got a ton of back stock and manufacturing materials from IBM with the Buckling Spring and related rights purchase so it was easiest to stay with that for a time.  Once they ran out they called up the cheapest sweat shop they could find and had them feed tin wire through a swizel stick machine to make their cables, which they permanently attached and even NIB ones are usually kinked.  The swizel stick machine probably broke so they went to the next cheapest guy who had a round cable machine.

What Lexmark did to the Model M goes against the entire mechanical and vintage keyboard owning overkill-engineering concept so I don't buy Lex's, I stick to early IBM made Model M's.  But that's just my view.

At least Unicomp did some original things.  Lexmark should have stuck to what IBM engineered or done something different with the buckling spring switch.

With all that said, many early "good Lexmarks" were actually IBM keyboards, New Old Stock or parts that IBM hadn't distributed yet, you can tell by the devolution of their stuff, their labels, etc. got cheap over time but the early boards were like IBM's.

No, I mean, I wonder why IBM bothered with SDL cables with the Model M. I suppose it allows variable length cables, and allows repair if you somehow managed to damage one of those things, but given that their earlier keyboards didn't have them, I wonder what prompted the change...

My best guess was the change from AT to PS/2, so, early model Ms could easily be converted into PS/2 boards when it was announced.

Obviously IBM knew about PS/2 beforehand and wanted the Model M to be compatible with this change.

EDIT: an example can be my 1986 Model M, it originally had an AT cable, but since it was missing, I just bought an SDL to PS/2, and now I don't need an adapter.
