[IC] GMK 1520 | It's back
« on: Mon, 20 September 2021, 06:22:36 »

A keyset inspired by some of the first portable laptops.
I’m very excited to post my Interest Check for GMK 1520!

GMK 1520 will use UV printing as well as double shot ABS.

Inspiration
This set was inspired by some of the first clamshell laptops that paved the way for the ultralight laptops we have today.

Colours

Note on colours: These colours will be displayed differently on different displays, however I do have physical samples and have attempted to match my renders to their appearance below.

Disclaimer:
I am not considering JTK to be the manufacturer for this set. Doing so will require new moulds resulting in either an insane price, an insane MOQ, or another set to run the same sublegends, none of which I want to do, sorry to all those who want this to be JTK 1520.

Consider N5 or TU2 from GMK color palette instead of RAL, that way the price will be as low as possible

I think you should move the black F11, F12, F13 keys to the Extension kit. They don't seem to serve any purpose in the base kit, other than being a throwback to the black Ins, Del keys on the original board, but I don't think that translates well to this set.

Consider adding a 1u Alt and two 1.5u System keys to the Extension kit, for Mac and OG HHKB bottom row support.

I'm here for the dual 3u bars and 3-key 40's in base.

Curious though, what's the reasoning for choosing GMK?

I'm a sucker for some retro source material, and nothing is cooler than the Gridcase 1520. I'll be picking this set up 100%.

Haven't gone through with a fine comb yet, but overall the subs look pretty faithful to the original. Here's a better image of source inspo for the curious

Can I ask why you're going with UV printing though. I'm pretty sure this could be double triple shot, unless the cost of mixing colors is prohibitive?

2 different color legends would make the entire keycap tripleshot, which GMK does not do, but JTK and Domikey might be able to.

The WoB would be doubleshot, and the extra color would be UV or pad printed.

Aight after simmering on this a bit I feel like the base kit has almost too much to offer, and I'd love to see this as fleshed out as possible since I love the set so much.

- 3 key is always appreciated, but I'm not too sure how useful it would be in this set. If you're using a 4 row keyboard you'd be cutting off the numpad sublegends, which doesn't really make much sense for the theming this has going for it. I'm not entirely sure if there's a solution to this and still include 40s support.

- The extra F11, F12, and F13 keys in base are really odd, maybe you could render the purpose for those?

- I personally always feel like alice B in base without the bars is odd. Either have the split bars in base or move the extra B to bars kit.

- There's so many possibilities for some fun child kits. One especially would be a macro kit imo.

Eons ago, there was an interest check for a keycap set based on a laptop. I think it was something related to a machine used in the first missions to the moon by NASA. This set made me recalled it; although, it never came to the GB phase, as long as I can remember.

Sounds like you're talking about GMK Azimuth which as based off the Grid Compass

Interesting to see that thread go through the same line of thought this is going through, namely around GMK pad vs JTK shot.

- There's so many possibilities for some fun child kits. One especially would be a macro kit imo.

I'm not sure that there would be a cost effective solution to 40s, but considering the full potential of this set seems to be on tkl's and larger, I don't necessarily see this as an issue.
I think that the extra black F11, F12, and F13 keys serve two functions; first, to continue the aesthetic of the original laptop which only has up to F10, and second, to be used with the black F1-F10 in the addons for either macros or a full black f-row.
Fully agree with you on alice kitting

Additionally, I think that this set would benefit from a ╎\ winkey like there is on the original gridcase, it would tie in very nicely.
Also consider adding the same boxes from the 1.5u fn key to the 1u fn key

What's this? GMK 1520? Sounds like the medieval version of 9009.

Wait, what? Actual sublegends that aren't Japanese? And they come in different colors?

Side note : Yellow is underrated and very good

I know it would drive the cost up and what you have at the moment seems the most bang for the buck.

I know people like the fonts and premium-ness of GMK (as well as the long queue perhaps) - but have you consider implementing this set with the triple-shot ABS tech of JTK?
I really like these colors to be all injected instead of printed - been following this colorway since IC of GMK AZiMUTH

Moving some space bars to the base and leaving others in the spacebar kit is kind of weird too.

Where you draw the line is the fun part of kitting, though, so I'm sure you could make a convincing argument in either direction.

I decided to keep the extra B in base in order to keep the spacebar kit cheaper and not add two extra colours to the spacebar kit.
Unfortunately I don't think I'll have alice bars in base as I already have 2.25u and 2.75u shift keys that can be used instead.

"can be used" is generous. I think it looks awful, and feels even worse. With respect to the colours, is the doubleshot the concern or the UV print? I think the second B would be fine without the UV print, personally.

it would be awesome to have a black f row in the base to make it cleaner without having to mix sets. just my take  :thumb:

I love this but it really needs ortho/40's support. Usually one of the first things to go on an ortho board is the numpad, so this set would be perfect. Pleaseeee.

Take a look at the inspiration for this keyset.
Making the function row black would make it less faithful to its inspiration.

While I'm usually a big fan of 3 key 40s support in the base kit, I don't think it works for this set. The red numpad sub legends on the alphas don't make sense on a 40s board without the top number row. You could remove a few keys from the base kit, and maybe add a separate 40s kit.

Also, I think the key unit sizing text is incorrect on the bottom row to the right of the space bar, and on the pipe key.

Sorry this probably won't happen as I'm following the inspiration and prefer how the grey f row looks

Yeah I'm currently working on a standalone 40s kit, I'm not completely sure the best solution however.

Also thanks for noticing the incorrect sizing labels, just fixed that.

Looks great! Will definitely consider grabbing a set when the gb opens.

How durable are the UV printed sublegends? Will they eventually rub off over long term use?

Although I don't have any UV printed keys personallly, I've seen the below image going around of GMK Griseann, which shows the ABS having tonnes of shine (and thus wear) while the UV printed legends are all fine.

There is not enough space to make it look good. I would prefer just text only shift, but icon is fine here.

There is enough space for the legend and the icon, I have many OG keys that exemplify it. Icon only shift keys can make it as well, but having one with no legends does not make sense.

As far as I can tell they're perfectly durable, this picture is of GMK Griseann and displays lots of shine but the UV print being fine:

There are many other GMK sets that have the icon + text legend, so there definitely is enough space for it. I just decided against it as I felt it was too cramped on the 1.25u key.

Maybe it’s not completely on the set theme, but would you consider adding a red Esc and Enter? They are nearly impossible to find now and should pair nicely with the set.

love the design and i love the macos/hhkb support! i’m wondering, however, if the 1.5u System keys in extension should be blue to match blue sublegends? (would seem to make more sense for macos.) if so, then need two 1u Alt in yellow. as is, the sublegends don’t tie together for macos. glwgb  :thumb:

a personal wish would be to add R3 1.75u Function key to extension kit.

Another suggestion is to turn black f-keys into m-keys and make them R1-R4. I don’t see a point in having 2 sets of f-keys, while m-keys would cover currently popular XT-layout boards like Zenith. Including Nine_ by Dudeship in your own renders.

Pretty much everyone I know strongly prefer for these keys to be of a proper row instead of all being R1. All R1 just looks like a sore thumb on these boards.

I just received quotes for pricing from GMK, so I expect the set to run in either Q1 or Q2 of 2022

The colours are based on the legend rather than the position on the board

The frow can be used as m keys as seen in the Nine_ renders, I don't really think the profile of the keys matters all that much for XT layouts, as they're not constantly used to type. I also feel like there are more people who want a black frow than those who want macro keys, so the black frow has been prioritised in kitting.

your ic, but you’re wrong. alt is not a thing on macs. the key combo is not alt+c for copy. it’s command+c. peace

edit: alt is relegated to teriary mod status and command (system) is promoted to primary. as a result, alt should be yellow and system should be blue according to the function assigned to these keys in macos.

I'm sorry about the confusion but the colour of each key is determined by their legend ("System", "Alt", or "A"), and not their location when in a layout or their function on any particular OS. The mods are not blue or yellow depending on how important or often used they are, I'm just using the same colours for the same legends used on my inspiration.

i think i am misunderstanding your inspiration: it looks to me like the mod key color ties to the sublegend on the alphas. but as currently rendered, a macos user must press a yellow system key to activate blue sublegends. kinda misses the point of color coding. i am struggling to get my head around the idea these are just pretty colors and not a user prompt, so i’ll likely pass. glwgb, this is a poggers set  :thumb:

i think we all have an appreciation for this set as well as the inspiration. so why do you think the keys were originally colored? it appears there is a logic in color matching "alt" with alpha sublegends that aligns with common keyboard shortcuts.

by all means, don't change a thing if you don't want to. i sorta assumed the non-vintage 1.5u system keys don't really have a place on a windows board. if there is a use for 1.5u system keys in windows i'll quit pushing a mac agenda. but if the systems keys are intended for macos users then they do not serve their intended purpose for our use case. that's all i'm trying to say. (guess i'm as uninformed about windows as many are about macs, and i'm actually looking to learn here.)

and fwiw, i fully understand the inspiration. i was only attempting to get the runner to see things from a macos user's pov, something that is not intuitive for many windows users. to say it differently, imagine the alt keys had yellow sublegends. makes no sense, right? not only because of the inspiration, but because the alpha sublegends are blue. the colors do not align. THAT is my point about the system keys being blue. since there are no system keys in the inspiration set i am confused why people who likely will not buy/use the system keys even care? peace

I agree, this is the first GMK set in a while that's really grabbed my attention. I really think you should keep it as is, especially the grey F keys. They're my favourite. :D

i think we all have an appreciation for this set as well as the inspiration. so why do you think the keys were originally colored? it appears there is a logic in color matching "alt" with alpha sublegends that aligns with common keyboard shortcuts.

by all means, don't change a thing if you don't want to. i sorta assumed the non-vintage 1.5u system keys don't really have a place on a windows board. if there is a use for 1.5u system keys in windows i'll quit pushing a mac agenda. but if the systems keys are intended for macos users then they do not serve their intended purpose for our use case. that's all i'm trying to say.

THAT is my point about the system keys being blue. since there are no system keys in the inspiration set i am confused why people who likely will not buy/use the system keys even care? peace

Those keys are primarily for HHKB users, not MacOS users.

Who would have 1.5 System key in the same place as Mac users, no? So it makes sense for them to be blue?

IMO flipping colors between 1.5 System and 1u Alt makes sense for all layouts and users

The frow can be used as m keys as seen in the Nine_ renders, I don't really think the profile of the keys matters all that much for XT layouts, as they're not constantly used to type. I also feel like there are more people who want a black frow than those who want macro keys, so the black frow has been prioritised in kitting.

As Zenith owner I strongly disagree.

I think it makes sense to include this in IC form. From I can gather from this thread people mostly prefer gray F-row, which would make sense since it’s more striking and original. By converting to M-keys you’d increase sales for both Extension kit and Base kit IMO.

I mean if you personally want a second F-row, that’s absolutely ok. It’s your set and I respect it. I think pretty much everyone in this hobby make things mostly for themselves.

What I’m trying to say is your assumption regarding how many people prefer what, might be incorrect in this case.

this. hhkb bottom row is 1u, 1.5u, 7u, 1.5u, 1u. if using a system key for 1.5u then it makes sense to be blue. same with macos and tsangan bottom row. last time i’ll post on this issue: please change 1.5u system to blue and have two 1u yellow alt in extension. there simply is no use case where 1.5u system in yellow makes sense.

Would add unnecessary cost, since there's an extra color and a uv legend.

The thing is, there are many ways to get WoB F-row, and 0 ways to get a proper XT-column in WoB.

Compatibility should be always prioritized IMO.

I want the set to get GB soon as well although I'm not quite sure when that'll happen, in terms of updates:
 - I have confirmed a cable collab.
 - I have received pricing from GMK.
Not quite sure when the best time to run the set will be as GMK lead times have been increasing and sales of GMK sets have been decreasing recently.
As much as I do want to run the set sooner rather than later, I do want the set to actually hit moq and I definitely don't want to change manu.

If you are able to do 250 moq like some of the other sets ran recently, I think it will hit that for sure. I really hope this can happen sooner rather than later.

Yeah but then you would be missing the 7-8-9 num pad legends that are not on the alphas. ( I get that the numbers are still there. ) It would look a little wonky & Splitting the MOQ up would drive the cost up further. Vala Supply is running GMK Lilac on Black 69usd for alt alphas and 125usd for base and its two color. This is more complicated. I'd rather pay 135+ for the whole thing than 85+ for just alphas.

The extension kit pairs really well with WOB.

Also - This set has really grown on me. I'll pickup everything.

Hi all!
Sorry for the lack of updates, unfortunately I've had family issues to deal with over the past year and have had not had any time to work on this set.
However, I still love this set and would eventually love to run it. Are you guys still interested in purchasing GMK 1520 if it were eventually to go into group buy?
If so, I would be glad to do the work required to have it run and get the set made.

I never lost interest in this set and am totally still in.

I would also like to take a moment and pass on my regards to you and your family. There are many things far more important than this keyset and I wish you the best in caring for those matters

I'd still buy too. Or if it was just an alphas kit to spice up your WoB.

Agreed that the alphas kit would be great (Though I'd love a full set)

GMK 1520 is back!

I have been wanting this set ever since the IC was posted, so in collaboration with Hark I will be helping bring this set to groupbuy.

We are in talks with a few vendors already, and we're currently in the process of getting up to date quotes for pricing. If anybody has any final suggestions for kitting, etc, please feel free to share. As you may have been able to see, we have implemented a few changes to lower pricing, since the market isn't as strong as it was.

I'm super excited for this set to finally run, and I really hope we can get this set the attention it deserves. Get your wallets ready

Gonna be honest... 99.99% won't happen. International kits rarely hit moq, so unless there's massive interest for it we're not really looking to add any new kits.

My feedback:

1. Replace the grey f row with the black f row from the extension kit, make the grey f row optional.
This way it can be a great WOB alternative and in my eyes it even looks better.
2. The R1 delete should be F13 sub legend, this way it can fit stuff like the Austin. And change the " R3 key from ~ sublegend to = sub legends, so you would have full numpad on TKL layout.

Other then that it looks great, hope the price will be right for this.

R1 delete w F13 sublegend is a neat idea. If you use it you're already gonna not use the insert delete F11/F12 pair...

1. We want to stay as true to the inspiration as possible, and imo it adds a level of uniqueness to any other wob set. If you don't want to pickup the extension kit, you could always get relgendables or use the f row from a different wob set.

2. I agree with the R1 delete, that will definitely be changed. Regarding the numpad subs, I will definitely look into it.
