Higher Monitor Refresh Rates in Windows XP

Windows 7 will let my monitor go up to 200Hz in 800x600 and 100Hz at 1200x600, but Windows XP only goes up to 120 and  85, respectively. Got any ideas on how to up my refresh rate here in XP?

Assuming your monitor's drivers are installed, Win XP should recognize the refresh rates each resolution supports. I've had no trouble making full usage of the absurd refresh rates aperture grill CRT used to offer.

However, if the drivers are installed and you're still having trouble upping the refresh rate, just download a separate software like ReForce to force the desirable refresh rate. I used it back in the day to bypass Win XP's infamous 60hz limit, and as long as you don't set something which your monitor doesn't support, you're safe.

Actually the problem ironically is usually the reverse.  Alot of gamers have had problems with win7 due to the fact that the OS will only use the settings in the firmware of the monitor (EDID), instead of letting the most current driver override the firmware.  XP didn't have that problem.  

I use CRT's to game with, and it has been hell trying to get high refresh rates in win7.  I have a higher end viewsonic that is capable of fairly high refresh rates, but only with later drivers.  Unfortunately win7 says 'nope, gotta use the EDID' .  I am very surprised you are having the opposite problem.

It seems to me here that the issue is to with Windows XP, and CRT monitors. Try getting rid of both and your problem should go away.

First off, the $400 LCD's that handle the same resolution as my $5 CRT don't handle nearly the refresh rates. So all that'll do is make solving the problem impossible.

Thanks for the guide. It worked. Now I got my 1600x1200 resolution at 100Hz. Looks wonderful.

But LCD's still got the 60Hz frame rate while my CRT monitor, refreshing at 100Hz, has a 100Hz frame rate. It's not a big deal, but everything's a little smoother on the CRT than my LCD's.

You're forgetting about frame rates on LCD's. My CRT refreshing at 100Hz has a far superior frame rate to almost any LCD computer monitor. I'm not a big gamer or anything, but the higher frame rate's still nice as it makes everything very smooth.

I am a big gamer. And even if the CRT gives me eye strain because of how big it is, I prefer to use that for gaming due to 800x600@120 than my 19" LCD@60hz anyday. Yes I am aware that there are 120hz LCDs on the market, but no, I'm not willing to pay £150+ for something that still has input lag.

There's a new LCD from LG though that deletes that 10ms input lag @ 120hz. Looks good, but stupidly expensive. I'll stick to my £15 CRT Monitor that's been used nearly every day for 2 years.

At 800x600 my $5 CRT goes up to 200Hz. Still better than those $500 LCD's!

MSW, What monitor do you have? Iiyama or something? That's pretty outrageous. :(

And that is a good way to hold monitors indeed rip, might try that.

16" Gateway2000 Vivitron (a trinitron tube) from 1996 (free)
16" Gateway EV7000 from 1998 (free)
21" IBM P275 Trinitron monitor from 2003 (Cost $5)
19" Dell Ultrasharp Crappy LCD (free)

ah those IBM monitors are really really sweet. I'm on a DellP991, not the best, but not too bad either! I guess i'll switch to a 24/6" when I stop gaming though. And rip, what's with the hate?

I enjoy your lego photos/other images far too much to ignore you. This got brought up in a conversation with a friend that has been on here like twice or something. 'That Ripster guy has amazing photos though', I had to agree.
