Topre Domes Damaged From Silencing Rings?
« on: Sat, 05 March 2022, 09:45:12 »
I bought a relatively inexpensive Topre RGB from eBay that had some fairly thick silicone silencing rings installed.  It was quiet as anything, but the domes had lost pretty much all tactility because of them.  I replaced the thick rings last night with DesKeys #3 thin rings, but the tactility is still not what it should be (I've owned another RGB in the past, and currently own an R2).  Does anyone have experience with this, and will the domes eventually go back to their original feel, or has being compressed for an unknown period of time with these thick rings permanently deformed the domes?

The thing with Topre RGB is that it's not uniform circle, there is an indent at bottom due to how the housing is constructed.  So you need the RGB edition ring.

So chances are it might've been using the wrong rings for so long so it keeps the dome somewhat compressed and it's now worn into shape.  I think if you remove all silence ring for a while it will come back a bit but probably not come back to its original state.

My wife had a FC660C that I used to use thicker silence ring in it, then after I remove it I still find it not as tactile as I remembered.  So as you said maybe prolonged period of compression deformed the domes a little bit.  I have since removed all silence ring and they do come back a bit but maybe not to its original state.

Though Topre in general, the most you use it the softer it gets, so you'll never get that "new dome" tactility unfortunately.

I'm using 55g R2, I find even in the morning the dome is stiffer and as I use it through the day, the dome are softer at night lol.

That's a good idea to remove the rings entirely and see if they come back.  I did use the RGB version of the DesKeys rings.  I was very happy with them in my last RGB, which thinking back on it, I never should have sold, but I suppose I had my reasons for it at the time.  I have the keyboard in the office today, so I'll have to see how it fares after a full day of typing on it.  Maybe I'll end up trying out a set of BKE domes if this one never loses its mushy feeling.  They've always sounded interesting.
