Which IPS LCD Monitor?
« on: Mon, 04 October 2010, 08:33:12 »
I am interested to (finally) replace my CRT screens. I have seen many LCD screens but I have never seen any that have the image quality of my old CRTs. Seems the LCDs aren't as sharp or as stable as my CRTs. I am told that an IPS LCD should be as good as my CRTs.

I presently use two 17" screens side by side. I was thinking of either two 23" screens or perhaps 3 screens if I could find 19" square LCDs.

I found this http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VP2365WB-23-Inch-IPS-Monitor/dp/B002R0JJYO which looks very nice--the 90% rotation sounds great because I might POTENTIALLY want to use the screen standing up--perhaps even 3 of them together then would work. I found this page of reviews http://reviews.cnet.com/2795-3174_7-318.html?tag=mncol;txt but the prices are far more than that Amazon price.

Anyhow any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you.

From what I read, you should probably go for the Dell U2311h.  It uses the same panel as that viewsonic, can be had for less money, and supposedly is brighter.  NEC also makes a better monitor with this same ips panel, compared to the viewsonic- according to reviews anyway.  Check slickdeals.net for coupons on the Dell, it seems to go on sale for 239$ every couple of weeks.

Pivoting to portrait mode is great for coding...  I have a friend who always says he likes portrait so he can "see the whole girl" :)

I have a 23" NEC EA231WMi (16:9) at home, which uses the same panel.  Great picture, horrible speakers.  Just about everything about it (aside from the speakers) is good.  I wasn't impressed with the "green" features, where it auto adjusts to ambient lighting and such.  It might make it more comfortable to use in various situations, but it made it too inaccurate to use for photo editing.  It have it all turned off.  FWIW, I picked mine up for $304.99 shipped on buy.com (back in January).

We have a lot of Dell 2209WA (22" 16:10) screens at work and I love those as well.  I originally intended to buy one of those, but the NEC had slightly (VERY slightly) favorable reviews on color accuracy and it was cheaper thanks to free shipping.  It was also the first time in many months that the 2209WA wasn't on sale.

I've got two 2209WA's myself. Nice and bright, good color, good response time, and that great 180 degree IPS viewing angle. My only problem with them is they get so warm...but that's typical of an IPS over a cheaper display, I think.

I bought a Dell U2410 IPS monitor when it went on sale on their website (about $450 IIRC, the regular price being around $700). I am very satisfied with it. I especially appreciate its 16:10 format and 1920x1200 resolution (as opposed to the more common 16:9 "full hd" 1920x1080 format).

You know Viewsonic sold monitors with the same panel as the T220/T221 right?

The Viewsonic VP2290 is the one you're thinking about I think.

A place I worked used to have one ages ago, but it was a big, heavy bastard of a thing with a res too high for its own good.
