I'm not familiar with the layout above. According to the picture, the child seams to operate the device by pressing the duck's toes.

Wait... Where's the computer?

It could be Costar - just saying that is a differently laid out controller board than the Filcos.

Very different case too.

If you look at some of the other pics in that series, you can see that particular 'board was an engineering sample, so it might not be exactly how it would look when completed.  That said, I'm not so sure that either 'board is a Costar model.  Although, the controller board around the arrow keys is very Costar-like.

Who cares if is Costar or not?  My iPod could have been made by Costar.

I don't think it matters, personally.  It might give some people a reference for quality/performance or even price.  People might not want to shell out for a Filco if they can get a Das for less, for example.

Your iPod was made by Foxconn, BTW.

Yes, but more importantly, better plastic.

EDIT: Read what Ripster wrote on laser etching in the wiki.  It's not the end all, be all for key legends.  Filco's pad printing process is very good, and it should last just as long as any laser etching.

It's not really a rumor.  Filco's caps suck in terms of losing their texture (going shiny).

I would imagine the main reason is that they don't have much texture in the first place.  That, and cheap plastic.

The Filco texture is a sort of smooth silky feel.  I have the blanks, but they're still coated.  I have a few shiny keys, but they haven't changed in feel.  The keys that are more worn, get less smooth to the touch and grab your finger a little more.  So, they feel more textured with age.  They're all kinda shiny to begin with, so the shiny spots look darker, than the spots without wear, but it is subtle, unless your keyboard is in a well lit room and you're looking for it.

To me the issue with the wear is how it looks (my blanks looked scuffed on the sides, thanks to the stupid smooth coating).
Brand new out of the box, the flimsy cheap plastic just doesn't feel as nice as better and thicker plastic.  It doesn't sound as nice, either.

I'm not a fan of the Filco keycaps, but it is starting to get blown out of proportion (they'll look years old, in a week or two).  True, I got blanks, so everything is more subtle, but my Filco looks a lot like the day I unboxed it.  Unfortunately, the keys had scuff marks on the side, with the coating, even then, although fewer.  At least they don't scuff on the tops.

The difference there is how long it takes to do that.  With a Topre it might take a few months.  With a Filco, that might be the end of the first week.

I normally wear through regular pad printed caps in a couple of weeks, but I've had my Filco for months and it still has the majority of its texture coating and it didn't wear the first week, second week or first month.  After that, well I paid it less attention, so I dunno when things got shinier.  The scuff marks though, they started the first day and continued . . which is crap.  It looks like I scratch the side of the keys, but I know I only hit the tops, I don't understand.

My Topre is lightly used, but looked new aside from dust.  I do expect it will look untouched for some time.  I didn't make any impression on my lasered cherry keys, either.  Oh wait, I did, some of the scratchy letters stopped feeling scratchy.

It didn't bother me any, and I do think they have the best-looking caps on the market (mainly due to the font).  I just happened to notice it, because I didn't expect it so soon.  It's not like I wore a hole through the cap or anything.

I will buy a Filco when they offer doubleshot or lasered keycaps.

I don't care if I have to pay extra, but I do care that the fit and finish be 100%.  This is why I haven't gone for the "sorta, kinda, more-or-less compatible" sets taken from other boards.

I saw another Ducky that LOOKED dye subliminated key print type, however it was using cherry black switches :/ meh ....

*DK-9008 茶軸 青軸 黑軸 * DK-9008 tea-axis // blue axis // black shaft
*DK 黑同刻茶軸 青軸 黑軸 * DK Black with engraved tea shaft // axis blue // black shaft

Which of this is the best to get ? I'm looking for either browns, red or clear cherry switches preferably. Also Full NKRO when using USB to PS2 adapter. Key prints either laser etched. dye subliminated or double shots.

How much are the Filcos actually? I have this impression that they range from S$160 - S$200+, but not too sure why it's so.

As for the differences between the Filco and Ducky, there is actually a similar thread on this

But I'd say the main advantages are what I've raised above. The ability to disable certain keys (ie: Windows key, and some others) using the build-in function keys, and also the detachable USB cable. For the Filco you need to buy that thing to stuff it under your key to prevent it from being pressed if you are really anal about disabling your Windows key during gaming, and likewise if your keyboard cable comes loose or is worn (it is rare, yeah...) on the Filco you got to ditch the whole keyboard, but with the Ducky you just go to a shop and get a new $3 mini-usb cable.

The DK-9008 is also the more expensive keyboard, with additional 4 function keys that you can map to launch certain applications or keyboard macros. The Filco is just equivalent to Ducky's cheaper DK-9004 (the 104 key variant) that doesn't have the 4 extra keys.

So while it is a bit more pain in the bum and all to get it. Overall it is a slightly better keyboard for slightly less money than the Filco. That, plus it is unique and different

Need more input. That dye subliminated keyboard looks sexy as hell. Do they have brown cherrys by any chance ? I can't friggin read chinese to know :/

They are just different variation for different taste and market.

Ducky have better keycaps as they are made from PBT.

Wow, could these be a better alternative to the Cherry G80-3494 ??

If they are still using the same technique they used on the kBTalking boards for the black-on-black then its pad printed and wears of faster than you can type "I should have gotten the Cherry".

By the way here are some pictures

So let me get this straight, the DK 黑同刻 is actually a DK-9008 but with black on black lettering ? Or am i mistaken ???

AND PLEASE FOR DEAR GOD somebody who can read chinese, does this DK 黑同刻 come with Cherry brown switches ????

In some other Mass order, the choices is either blue or black switches. They also get a free FULL SET of keycaps as part of the new release promotion. I am WONDERING whether if i bought it individually whether it would apply to me as well. I've sent out an email and hope to get a reply soon :/

PS: I am also getting mixed messages whether the keys are abs or pbt.

Hm what i liked about this keyboard is the wire is easily disconnect able  and replaced. Also has good wiring management, and it has function keys to disable the windows key.

Anyway

Black Shaft means Cherry MX Black and Tea-Axis means Cherry MX Brown.

So what the **** does Tea-shaft mean ??? is that a Cherry MX Brown ?

黑同刻= black on black for keycaps and if it says 茶軸, its Cherry MX brown.

They gave a full set a keycaps for free because they didn't have the blank versions (otaku version) available at that time and they had to deliver the blank keyboards around the promised date, so they gave those lucky ppl a normal Ducky 1087 and a set of blank keycaps.

I just wish we could the engraved caps in the US.  I really like the black on grey caps Topre has, and the engraved KBC caps would be a good substitute for Cherry keyboards.

Ok so they have this

DK 黑同刻 茶軸

DK black on black + cherry mx brown.

So is that black on black the only difference being the key caps ? But it's basically a Ducky 1087 ???

I believe those full sets of keys they are getting aren't blanks, but actually engraved spares o_O; i saw the screenshots they posted.

Sadly that bulk is a choice between blue and black.

Hopefully if i get an email reply back from the Ducky retailer, and their giving free key cap for a brown ducky purchase, that would be great :X

If not, i wonder whether i should get a blue or black as part of that bulk they are doing hm.... is it worth it rather then getting a brown ducky ?

Ok i need some help here guys.

http://forums.vr-zone.com/mass-order-forum/861057-mo-2-cherry-mx-ducky-108-keys-mechanical-keyboards-free-bonus-keycaps-6.html

Basically if i join their mass order, i can probably get it cheaper since their bulking. Also as part of the promotion i can get a free full set of key caps (not blanks from what i heard).

However the choices in this MO is either black or blue only. What i would have preferred was either brown, red or clears; however this keyboard only has either brown, black or blue. Sadly brown isn't selectable for this mass order.

So for gaming and typing, should i get the black or the blue ???? From what i heard blue may be a better compromise for doing both. Will i regret the blue or should i go through the trouble of ordering the brown by myself and pray that i get a free full set of keycaps + a price not much higher than the MO.

Please any advise from the experts on geekhacks :{

Typing :
Blue : AWESOME (will annoy surrounding people)
Black : Short messages are fine. Anything longer is too harsh for me.

Gaming :
Blue : Double-tapping becomes an issue due to the high release point
Black : Awesome but not for me as i need the tactile feel.
