EDIT: I had posted about the potential to run this in an alternate Cherry profile, along with some renders. But I think we're moving forward with DCS through SP after all, so I'm taking those down to avoid any confusion.

October Update:

Last month SP reiterated that they're interested in offering SMRT in DCS, but there's still no firm commitment or time frame. I have a short window to work on it this fall, before the Selectresque group buy starts taking more of time time.

One concept I've been playing with is a scaled-down DCS monokit version, that would be easier for SP to produce:

But I've also been using this time to port SMRT to alternate profiles as a backup option. A vendor approached me a few weeks ago about designing for Keyreative's KAP profile (doubleshot Cherry, in ABS or PBT), and that's currently the strongest candidate. I've already designed several potential KAP kits, including a large base with minivan and UK ISO baked in; a full 40s kit; NorDe and Mac kits; and a yellow alert-style accent row.

Potential KAP Kits and Render:

So we'll see. It's likely I'll move forward with KAP if I don't hear anything firmer from SP, since I don't want to see yet another Wyse-themed set wind up in limbo.

Oh no, KAP wouldn't have Blue Alphas? That's my favorite look for this set, with or without sublegends.

I just omitted them because I wasn't sure how many kits their vendors would want to run. There wouldn't likely be sublegends, because I don't think the molds exist yet. But I'm open to offering blue alphas if vendors are willing to carry them.

DCS monokit looks good.
Hopefully SP will have convex DCS short bars available until then.

Another update - I heard from Will at SP this evening, and we'll figure out a way to do this through them. I'm going to take down the alternate profile renders since they're moot now. I don't have any more details yet, but we'll get this to you in DCS.

Re: [IC] DCS SMRT | 11/4/24 - Kitting Finalized, Pre-Sale Info Coming Soon
« Reply #57 on: Mon, 04 November 2024, 17:49:06 »
Updated the kitting based on the feedback I've gotten on the SP Discord server this past week, and sent it to SP. They like it, and pre-sale info is coming soon!

I did scale back the full set of blue alt alphas and the yellow alert row to a single more manageable yellow accent kit, as one of my last changes. Gray alphas and blue accents are now in the base, and I didn't think a whole separate blue alphas kit would be viable.

But there's still plenty of color to be had, and the scaled-down yellow accent kit gave me a place to put VIM arrows. We've also now got ergo support for the three of you out there, UK ISO and Minivan coverage in the base, OS mods in the alts kit, more vintage Wyse legends, a robust 40s kit with tons of minibar goodness, and other small changes I hope you'll appreciate.

Just a heads up for anyone thinking of supporting this set, the runner and I were previously discussing WYSE sets, and we agreed that my compatibility set should run before this set. However they have now blocked me so I cannot contact them regarding feedback on their set. I have also heard from others that the designer is adamant and is not open to feedback on some of the legends. Please think twice before you support this project

bro tried to takedown smrt to release a modkit thats not even progressing past "sp prices bad"
i'm gonna support whoever's making wyse accessible

regarding the "not open to feedback" comment, he has been consulting the SP discord for kitting feedback, its open and you can see how much he discusses with the people there so idk what you're trying to imply

I feel like I've been pretty flexible in terms of incorporating feedback, which yeah, I'm mostly gathering through Discord, since it's easier to chat with people in real time. It's also easier for SP to watch and chime in on themselves, since I'm working closely with them.

I am favoring some funky legends, just on personal preference, not so much to actively spite anyone. I love weird, retro, and vintage legends, and Wyse boards historically were chock full of those. It's part of the fun.

Since I'm splitting the words "Back Space" on the 2u and 1.75u keys, I chose to also split it on the 1.5u key so it'd match. I know that's not a super popular decision, but getting to choose stuff like that is part of the fun of designing a set! That's one thing I've been stubborn on; that I'd prefer to match the 1.5u Backspace to the other sizes, and I wanted all of them to be just ever so slightly weird.

I have incorporated changes that were practical - adding an additional 1.25u space key to the 40s kit, etc. I'm just trying to draw a line *somewhere* with more eclectic requests that I just don't think will be commercially viable. Like stepped R4 mods, 9.75u spacebars, LED windowed keys - those are all super cool and I'd add them if I could. But I also have a relationship with SP where they've already run one of my designs, are prepping to run this one, and will hopefully let me make more for them down the line. I don't want to be pushing stuff that just won't sell enough, and will wind up costing them money and sitting on shelves.

SMRT, as it stands today, is what I like. That's really all I can do, design for what I think looks neat and feels fun. If I strip out everything unique about it, it's just another grey-beige set. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it. I'm hoping a lot of you will also think it's worth getting. But also, this is a historical colorway no one owns, and any of y'all can try to run keys to fit it. The stock color codes are right there. Make an extension kit with the stuff I left out, or an alternate Backspace key. I might even buy it myself.

I resent attempts to bully me into not running this set, but I've never attempted to discourage anyone from buying any other Wyse-themed set myself. On the contrary, you can see in the other thread that I've wished it good luck, and encouraged people to buy it. I think that speaks for itself.

I noticed 10u was removed at some point. Any way to add it please?
Is this running in November or TBD?

Unfortunately not; very, very few people said they'd buy it compared to the other kits, so there wasn't enough demand to justify keeping it.

Presale is live! The presale price is $10 off the eventual in-stock base kit price, at $99, including basic 40's, blue accents, and UK ISO. Currently SPKeyboards is the only vendor, but I know Will has been asking around regarding other potential international proxies.

https://spkeyboards.com/products/dcs-smrt-keycaps

I'm getting together a GB post, and then I'll have the mods close this out.

I'd like to thank Bob, Melissa, and Will at SP for the opportunity to make this with them, and for their confidence in me. This is my second set to go on sale through Signature Plastics in less than a month, and also just my second set ever. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I'd be creating even one new design, let alone establishing a name for myself in this hobby.

Looking good! Can you tell me if there will be a Canadian vendor?

Not sure yet! Will at SP has been reaching out to international vendors, so hopefully! But I can't make any promises yet. I'll update the GB post I'm making if that happens.
