[IC] 818 - A Plateless Keyboard.
« on: Thu, 09 January 2025, 12:29:56 »

Dear keyboard illuminati,
if you know where I can get good beige coats(powder/cerakote),
can you tell me?

DISCORD IC FORM

Inspiration
I am a fan of plateless boards.
A few months ago, I made a keyboard called the K-III,
which was built on the same mounting method as this,
and I thought it sounded/felt nice.
I wanted to then expand that same structure to an 1800 form factor,
with vintage-inspired stylings.

Mounting & Specifications

The mounting system utilizes 2x 3mm orings that sandwich the PCB on both sides,
with channels cut in the top and bottom case to friction fit the orings (similar to F1 mount style).

- 8 deg typing angle
- 2.87kgs unbuilt (alu) / 1.27kgs unbuilt (pc)
- 19.6 adjusted front height

Internal channels for the orings

PCB Layout

Supports most things that make sense in this layout.
Will be designed by the wonderful Sleepdealer.

Sales & Pricing
- February 2025 GB (maybe???)
- 5 units black aluminum / 5 units polycarbonate small run
(fulfilling everything myself so would like to not overextend myself!)
- Aiming for $450 - $520, incl. hard case/PCB/cable
- Made by your favorite (overpriced) manufacturer

Gallery

PC version

Three indicator lights at the F13 location

Integrated cable!
I will include a JST-USBA cable in the kit,
which will be tied to the PCB "OTD style"

Thanks
Thanks to steve for pushing for 6u layout  ;D  & Pontus, as always

Pretty cool. Do enjoy the idea of a G80-1800 inspired board though I'd personally shy away from integrated cable if possible. Looks nice!

Love the idea of an integrated cable. This isn't a board that you'd move around a lot anyway.

I'm curious about how tight the mounting is with O-ring friction. Excessive space for the O-rings could lead to significant PCB wobble.

I tested the dimensions for the mounting on the other board, and once it is assembled, the PCB doesn't move at all  :thumb:

That's excellent news! I was concerned about potential PCB wobble, and you've addressed that effectively. A secure mounting is crucial for a stable and consistent typing experience, as exemplified by the excellent mounting in GEON Works' F-series keyboards.

However, based on my personal preferences, I sometimes find that O-ring mountings can feel slightly 'dead' or lack a touch of lively feedback. I wonder if a very slight increase in vertical space, perhaps 0.15mm to 0.25mm, could potentially introduce a more pronounced bounce and a slightly more tactile feel. This is purely speculative, of course, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this potential option.

while i get the integrated cable would fit the vibe very well, i just can't help but feel like a traditional usb-c is so much more practical.

Love the design but ditto on what Diego said; it'd be a bit inconvenient to have to use an integrated cable.
