Dampened alps mod, now some keys aren't working
« on: Tue, 16 November 2010, 09:14:17 »
(I apologize but I first posted this in the mod section then realized it was for articles, I'm not sure how to delete it)

Hi all,

I'm pretty new here to Geekhack, I've been lurking for a while checking out reviews and articles, and decided to buy an Omnikey Northgate Evolution ergonomic keyboard. I then bought an AEKII for it's dampened sliders and moded the Northgate. (By the way thanks for all the great articles on Alps to the the authors who contributed!)

I put the Northgate back together and everything was working great when testing in AquaKey until I discovered the following:

- Pressing the 'E' key actually triggers the 'R' key
- Pressing the 'S' key actually triggers the 'D' key
- Pressing caps lock actually triggers the Left Shift key

I've tried taking the r, r, s, d, and caps lock keys back off but can't fix the issue, any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!

I sounds to me as if some piece of metal is making contact on the circuit board where it shouldn't, or as if a line on the circuit board is broken.

You did only open the switches and swapped the sliders, did you? There is no need to desolder ALPS switches to be able to open them.

thanks for the response, yeah I only pulled off the keycaps (using the Hoolean keypuller tool) then opened the switches and swapped the sliders. I never went deeper then that or desoldered or anything.

Might be worth using Aqua's Keytest to check if any keys are stuck 'down'. Press all keys. Any stuck keys will show as not being pressed. (Ironically.)

I tried Aqua's keytest and pressed all keys, it shows the e, s, and caps locks keys as not pressed, although those keys still trigger other keys. Could this mean the e s and caps lock are stuck? If so, I'm not sure how to fix it other then opening the keyboard and checking out the pcb

Oh interesting, yeah it is programmable (has a "macro" mode) so you think maybe I inadvertently reprogrammed it when I was modding it? Thanks, I'll try a reset (I assume I can figure out how to do that from the forums/Google?)
