Cherry Blacks, Clears, or Torpes?
« on: Thu, 02 December 2010, 12:08:49 »
Been lurking a while -- Geekhack lead me to purchase my 2nd and (sorta) 3rd mechanicals.  My first was a buckling spring Matias back in the day.

Right now, I've got a Filco Blue at home and a brown at work.  I keep running into issues, however, since I'm a BIG heavy hitter on the keys.  I nearly always bottom out on the blue, and it takes a lot of conscious effort to not fully bottom out on the brown. And even then, I still tend to do so.  It's even worse on the blue at home after I play a game since I'm usually using 100% sustained force for so long that I bang hard on the keys.

Due to a new job, I'm going to be spending more time at the girlfriend's house, but probably be awake a lot of the times when she's asleep (midnight shift).  As the apartment is small and is only a jump away from a studio, I'm looking to find a keyboard for use there (and probably at home) that's a bit quieter than what I have, yet also manages to accomidate my banging on the keys and not feel horrible.

Usage wise, it's about 50/50 between serious typing and gaming.  I also do coding/scripting from time to time, but moreso at work than home.  I'm always a touch typist, so lettering is irrelevant.  My average sustained type speed from a copy is about 100 WPM on the brown right now.  Much slower and less accurate on the blue.

With the new job, I'm going to be strictly using a generic rubber dome keyboard as we're not going to be permitted to bring in our own devices.  If I get lucky, I might be able to convince the resource manager to move my keyboard along with me (same building and organization, but different contract and work area), but it's doubtful since it's going to be a shared workstation.

So that now leads me to the principle question.  From what I've gathered with research, I'm not sure if I should go with a black Cherry, a clear, or skip the Cherry's alltogether and go with a Torpes RealForce or HHKB.  Since I bang the keys pretty heavily and will be forced to use a rubber dome + do a lot of typing at work, I'm thinking that a Torpes swtich would be best for consistency sake.  I also thought about the blacks since I'd pretty much be bottoming out, so the linear force and actuation point probably wouldn't bother me as much as bottoming out on the blues at home.  As for the clears, I can't find all that much info about them except for that they're "between a black and brown."

I tossed in the HHKB due to its portability I'll probably be using the same keyboard at home and at my girlfriends to maintain consistency.  Switching between keyboards all the time slows my speed back down, and I really am not looking to buy TWO Torpes :) So if someone does recommend the Torpes-style switch, I guess I'd need a second recommendation between the realforce variable weighted and the 45g HHKB.

Thanks all.  Apologies for a long winded post.

CLIFFS
-Looking for something quiet
-I type very heavy and frequently bottom out, especially on the pointer/ring fingers.
-50/50 gaming/heavy typing.
-Will be forced to use generic OEM rubber domes at work
-Portability a plus, but 10-key is also a plus
-Looking at Deck (clear/black), Realforce variable, or HHKB

To my knowledge, the realforce is quietest (more so than hhkb).

If you're going to be doing any gaming at all, I would probably stay away from the HHKB; that keyboard was designed with typing in mind.  I would probably suggest the Realforce strictly on the strength that you will be using rubber domes at work, and while they are quite different feeling than the average rubber dome, they will be close enough that it will be an easier transition.  That, and it will be the quietest of the bunch.

That's what I figured.  The clears might be a viable option if I could keep my brown in the new job, but the way I tend to mash keys I'd probably enjoy the Realforce better. From what I've read, it is more "cushy" when you bottom out than Cherry switches.

I do like the browns, except for when I bottom out :P  'spose I'll give the Realforce a shot once the new job starts.  My girlfriend will probably like it better.  Hopefuly.  Right now, until she buys a new keyboard, she's wanting me to bring along one of the newer Microsoft Natural keyboards.  I can't really stand typing on that thing.

As much as I love my HHKB, it does suck for gaming. Just missing a lot of commonly used keys in a lot of common games, lacking dedicated arrow keys, etc.

Makes an awesome typer, though.
