lcd for keyboard modification ?
« on: Sat, 18 December 2010, 06:34:54 »
I haven't seen any mechanical keyboards with an LCD on them, unless it was  the G15-g19 rubberdome keyboard.

Any ideas if there is; or whether anyones done a LCD mod :X

Or if there is an alternative to having an LCD on the keyboard.

The reason i ask is because the G15 lcd helped me with Ventrilo in World of Warcraft. So was wondering if i could retain that sort of feature even after going mechanical :X

Alternative would be to just have a standalone display, you could fit it under or on top of your monitor then, which I reckon would be better. Take a look at what people building HTPCs have used for their front panel displays, that's probably the easiest route.

You know those LCD photo frames. Has anyone ever managed to get them to work with ventrilo ?

That could be a good substitute :/

Couldn't you obtain a broken G15 (where the display isn't broken) and as Soarer says, isolate that for putting near your monitor? Your post implies you had or have an unused one.

I still don't understand why a keyboard needs a kitchen sink. It's for input and the only output should be received by your hands. In most cases this is limited to the tactile interface of normal typing :S

Yes i have a G15 V1. But i don't have the technical skills to harvest and set it up for some modding :/

Anyway the thin cable connecting the lcd to the keyboard got cut. The lcd is fine, just that one brown thin wire got cut when i disassembled it for cleaning.

Hmm. I dunno what other LCDs ventrilo supports, that's probably the limiting factor.
Possibly someone out there has made some other LCD pretend to be a G15 display, that's another angle to investigate I guess (no idea how likely that is).
