cheapest tenkeyless?
« on: Sun, 23 January 2011, 04:04:18 »
Hi there, I am new to the forum and just starting to dwell into the realm of mechanical switches. I have never owned one before but as someone who frequently uses the keyboard, I wouldn't mind getting into mechanical keyboards.

Right now, I'm looking at something affordable and "fun" to type. I would prefer a tenkeyless for space saving reasons and overall ergonomics as I don't want to keep my hands more to the left while typing. I prefer to keep my hands centered but some times that's not possible with a full sized keyboard.

I like the Happy Hacking 10keyless because it looks really nice and sounds beautiful, but its out of my price range which is less that $100 or a little over if it's absolutely worth it.

Tenkeyless isn't absolutely necessary but highly preferred.

Are there any UTR (under the radar) keyboards that are great deals? I would really love for a similar design to the HHKB2 keyboard as it suits my needs perfectly. I'm always after the best bang for the buck.

Thanks all.

edit - I am really considering the Rosewill RK-9000 since it is in stock and for $99 I am not sure there is a better alternative. Too bad it's not a 10keyless.

I urge you to spend some extra dollars to get a tenkeyless, if the board is gonna last for 10 years the price difference is nothing. It's really crazy that tenkeyless boards are more expensive, but I put up with it.

Welcome to GeekHack! I recommend that you start here in your search. What do you use your keyboard for? Gaming, coding, typing, or surfing? Or some combination of those?

Have you considered the Noppoo Choc Mini? Some members around here have been picking those up recently and it seems to be well received.

There's a review of the Noppoo with Cherry MX Brown switches. The first page on the comments contains instructions on how to order one from http://www.taobao.com

The PLU M-87 is also being fairly well received and is cheaper than the Noppoo Choc Mini. The only reason I ordered a Noppoo was because the M87 was out of stock. I can't remember who ordered one recently, but they had swapped all the white alphabet keys in their M87 and put in blue ones, and it looked absolutely pimp. Blue keys w. blue switches... mmm.

Oh, you'd have to order off taobao, which generally means going through an agent like obook or similar. Feel free to ask if you need more help =]

I am hesitating to recommend new members to buy keyboards in this manner. Buying keyboards from overseas has many drawbacks, and isn't right for everybody. I don't recommend it for anyone for their first mechanical buying experience unless they've done PLENTY of research first and are absolutely sure that it's the one they want!

That's why I linked to the "Start Here" wiki as the poster doesn't seem to even be sure yet about what type of switches they want. It's better for new users to do their own research than for all of us to come and shove our favorite keyboards down their throat. Makes their experience here much less confusing.

It's important to know what they'll be using their keyboard for - unless we know that we can't really begin to recommend a certain switch or keyboard.

In that case, you can check out the DAS keyboards. They are around the same price and even less (with student discount).

Yeah, I'm actually torn between DAS and the RK-9000 now.  A das ends up being around $98 with the student discount... No tax, free shipping.  That basically makes it cheaper than any rosewill deal right now, but it seems like a larger board, and the gloss finish drives some people nuts.

That said, they're basically in the same league, no?

That's correct. Build quality seems to be on par. I have no idea about the difference in Keycap quality (I believe that info is in the Keycap wiki).

Yea that's what I thought :D

The Rosewill seems to be on part quality-wise with Filco, since they're both made by Diatec. Arguments between Filco and Das have generally always come down to what folks think "looks better".

Hi there, thanks everyone for the suggestion. I knew if I asked, I would find some keyboards that I haven't even heard of like that Noppoo Choc Mini, which looks absolutely amazing!

I did already read that guide before my post and it did help me to narrow down my preference to a tenkeyless brown or blue switch keyboard. NKRO isn't a must, but would be nice. I mainly do typing/coding/FPS gaming. From my understanding Topre is more expensive, but if that is not true, that would be another preference too.

I'm from the USA so I don't know how hard the process of ordering from tabao would be. If you can share more information regarding that, that will be great. I looked for the M-87 keyboard but I couldn't find anything about that.

I do like the das but I really hate glossy. I will look more into the das. Too bad they don't make a 10keyless.

Thanks guys, great input so far.

edit - found out it was a PLU ML-87 which looks fantastic.

If you're a coder, the HHKB would be ideal. But as you already stated, it is out of your price range.

Have you looked at the Unicomps? Classic Model M styling, not very expensive, last forever. But, 2KRO, and the sound does drive some folks nuts.

I picked up one as well, and as long as you know what switch you want, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Build quality really compares to my Filco, it's far better than I expected for a Chinese keyboard. I have two minor complaints about it, and it's something I think wouldn't bother most people. First, the key profile is just SLIGHTLY different from Filco/Das/KBC/etc. The Q and A rows match well enough, but the Z row has a slightly different angle that means if you're trying to mix and match KBC keys something just seems off. Second, it's only 2kro. It's fairly well optimized around WASD, even allowing all four of WASD at the same time, but the arrow keys are lacking, which frustrates me for Stepmania.

The price was great, and Obook was great to work with, shipping fast and keeping me updated the entire time. If you've figured out what kind of switches you want, and want a tenkeyless, I'd go ahead and take the plunge and order overseas. If it turns out you don't LOVE it, just resell the board here, you should be able to make back the majority of your money. My specific keyboard was $77 before shipping to the US, and it was one of the most expensive ML-87's listed, at 389 RMB for a white keyboard with blank keys and mx browns. If you're after a black one with lettering, or a board with blues, you should save a bit over that. I couldn't tell you how much shipping ran, I ended up making a fairly large order of other stuff to go with it, and the keyboard was around a third of the package.

Thanks. Right now, I am really interested in the ML-87 and the Noppoo Choc Mini. If  you have a friend that speaks/reads fluent Mandarin, is there any reason why I should order  through Obook? Or is it for customs reasons?

It seems even after shipping costs, ordering these are the best options for a cheap but well made 10keyless.

Well, for Taobao you need to have a chinese bank account or similar to order, so unless your friend is actually in China and can order it and then ship to you, you'll need to go through a purchasing agent like Obook. If you know someone over there, you'll save the 15% Obook fee, but it might cost you that or more in shipping to the US, as Obook does claim a fairly big discount on shipping due to the volumes they do. DHL shipping was ~$45 for 3.1kg with their discount, they claim it would've been ~$103 without.

The unicomp is definitely not a gamers keyboard, which is why the key roll over doesn't matter in the slightest. Unless you're Typewriter Mingo...then it might.

They do give you a tracking number, and you *might* be able to pay for insurance, but I didn't ask. They use reputable shipping companies, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I went with EMS/TNT, my package shipped out on Saturday the 15th and I had it in my hands Monday the 17th.

I ordered a ducky tenkeyless using this method
http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=12854

along with their wrist rest for $130 shipped, w/o the wrist rest I think it would have been like $110 just for the keyboard shipped to the US, which isn't bad.
