New mouse time, suggestions?
« on: Tue, 25 January 2011, 18:56:05 »
Hi, I'm a long time lurker but this is my first post ;)

I need a new mouse to go with my Filco Majestouch keyboard (which is superb, I love it).

My recent mouse history is:

Microsoft Intellimouse (various)
Logitech MX1000
Logitech MX Revolution

The two Logitech mice are probably my recent favourites, and I'd prefer to stay wireless - however, the latest Logitech (the Performance Mouse MX) is really uncomfortable to hold (my opinion, YMMV).

What do you guys suggest? Crazy gaming mice will be considered but gaming is only a small proportion of my use.

What's wrong with the MX Revo? If you like it, stick with it.

I'd run with a g500 or a MX518 if you're short on cash. I love the free wheel mode on the g500 despite many who hate it.

Wireless
G700 :D

My MX revolution has committed suicide. It's the mouse itself, not the receiver, and I've already tried swapping the internal battery. Just doesn't turn on or charge no matter what I do.

Edit: G700 looks tempting, and I'd rather have a good mouse than save money - I use this all day long and plan to keep for at least 3 odd years. Any other suggestions?

Depends if you're gaming or not I suppose.

All round though I'd recommend the 3.0, that mouse is very comfortable and has a nice sensor if you do want to pick up gaming. The mouse 4 and 5 work beautifully too in any O/S, and they are pretty cheap for what you get.

I'm on my third now but will be purchasing my 4th when I get paid because the cable is broken on it and I get friction. If yours would be under warranty, MS are very good. I requested a new one and it arrived the next day, with no need to send my old one (with a broken cable connection) back. I repaired it and it still sits in a box. The main problem is the severe lack of mouse cables...

Depends on your sensitivity. If you tend to play with lower, consider a mouse with low liftoff distance. For example, I briefly tried the Salmosa, but everytime I would lift the mouse up it would continue tracking and jiggle my crosshair.

I ended up buying a Razer Mamba - wireless is a big thing for me and I like the charging dock, plus it's _very_ comfortable.

I also got a Kensington Orbit Trackball with Scroll Ring because I wanted to try a trackball and I'm actually impressed.

Managed to get the pair from amazon for good low prices :)

Edit: Attached a pic, and yes, I know my desk is messy. I'm at uni and this desk is far too small for my insane amount of computing stuff (blame my iphone for the awful picture quality).

Second the G500.  Great mouse, I love mine.  (it is wired though, and the op specified a preference for staying wireless)

I have also found some uses for the free wheeling mode, but I am not the biggest fan of it for everything.

It should be noted that the scroll wheel has a button with which you can select whether to turn on the free-wheeling mode, or to leave it in a more traditional mode.

The MX518 is far lighter than the G500, right? I haven't actually used the G500 but a friend of mine has the original G5 and the MX518 is far lighter even when the G5 has the batteries removed.

My scroll wheel is starting to die in my 3rd MX518 and I'll probably just get another.

If you have the money, and want wireless, I'd vouch for the G700. I've tried it briefly and really liked it.

I'm not sure about the exact weights, but the G500 comes with a weight set, so you can decide how much it weighs by adding or removing them.   I have all the weights in it.   I prefer a heavier mouse.

Indeed. I meant to weights instead of batteries. Does anyone know what the G500 weighs without any of the weights?

I was about to say I'd weigh mine, but I don't have a scale...
