At the Deck owners: Quick software based experiment plz ?
« on: Thu, 27 January 2011, 11:01:24 »
Heya Deck owners,

I was just informed about a thing called "EurKey" which is a driver that lets you use Euro-Characters on a US-Layout board. It basically turns right Alt into the Euro-Essential-Key "AltGr". Then letters like äöü can be typed by using AltGr+aou and ÄÖÜ by using AltGr+Shift+aou.

This sounds pretty awesome, but...
I was talking about something similar like this to the Deck Guy (Adam) at Deck as well as the ActiveKey Guy (...) at ActiveKey in Germany. Both told me that the Deck effectively just doesn't have more than 2 "input layers" which means only "Key" or "Shift+Key" work. Incorporating AltGr would need a third and AltGr+Shift a fourth layer.

Now I do believe the Deck dude and the ActiveKey dude and I mean, the Deck Legend in all its glory IS one of the few (?) boards that are not able to give u NKRO using a USB to PS/2 adapter.... but trying out can't hurt, can it? :)

I sent back my Deck and don't feel like ordering and sending back one again just to try it out. So if anyone would be willing to try out these "EurKey" drivers and see if the 3rd and 4th layer work, it would be greatly appreciated!
Cuz if they do, I'd be all over a Legend in a heartbeat ^^

/Edit
no link to EurKey provided, cuz the site was just down when I tried. Just google "EurKey" ;)

I don't own a Deck, but I use EurKey with my Filco FKBN104M/EB (US-Layout) for about a month now. I just tested it with a 5€ rubber dome (US-Layout) and it works.
I doubt a dirt cheap 5€ rubber dome can handle more than a Deck could.

That's an odd thing for Deck to say.  AltGr is just a glorified RAlt with it's own scancode.

Yes indeed. And one would hope that they didn't mess this up in a board that's well above $100. Since it has NKRO, there isn't even the possibility of blocking occurring (even if the matrix routing were crappy).

I want to have some of the stuff they're smoking.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

In the German forum where I am active this whole thing is obviously more important to the members, cuz they're all Germany and such y'know... :D

And one of em actually owns a Deck (forgot about that ^^). He tried and says it works. I just asked him to confirm (his post was a bit ambiguous). If it does, I think the Deck legend will become popular again in Germany ^^

Will post here as soon as it's confirmed. To me this is quite exciting because the ANSI Layout was not that much of a problem in itself. Being unable to use Umlaute (ÄÖÜ) and ß and € was more of a drag. If that's possible with AltGr and AltGr+Shift then that should be fine and I wouldn't mind at all to give the ANSI layout a shot and see if I get warm with it and if the characters are truly better arranged than on ISO...

I would be happy to hear that the EurKey would working with a Deck Legend. If it works I think I will buy a Deck Legend Ice Tacticle. But I dont know where I should buy it, because of the shipping to Germany and the taxes :(

RAlt/AltGr + a / o / u for ä / ö / ë | + s for ß | + 4 for € works like a charm :)

It took me 2-3 days to get used to the EurKEY layout and my brain doesn't seem to have a problem with switching between ansi and iso except for y and z sometimes.

Yeah I also just got the confirmation from the dude in the German forum that it works, both with AltGr and AltGr+Shift. Wonder what the deck and activekey dude were talking about. Apparently they really don't care about turning a buck ;)

Now the question is, where to get it from. ActiveKey only lists 2 Legends on their website (red and green I believe) plus a couple of 82s but I think I'd go for the Legend, or not ... hmmmm DECISIONS AGAIN ! damn

Can anyone suggest a website from US or elsewhere where to buy? DataCal and Performance-PCs are listed on the Deck website, neither one has the full program either and slightly varying prices...

The euopean distributor ActiveKey told me today, that they will import the Deck Legend for us, so I am a little bit closer to get one :)

Btw. if you get a Windows-Error-Sound while starting any Mozilla product (Firefox/Thunderbird, etc...) that is because of EurKEY. I don't know why, but that only happens with Firefox/Thunderbird and the EurKEY-layout active.

Just a "warning" in case you still plan to use EurKEY.
