Noob question
« on: Sun, 06 February 2011, 02:04:43 »
Hey guys , i have a question for you about mechanical keyboards .. which is better for gaming ? Cherry mx black , brown or blue switches ? I've tried the blue before and i kinda like the clicky feel but i have not tried mx black or brown before because i can't :( ! What switches does the Steelseries 6gv2 use ? Would you recommend it ? Or should i buy the Filco keyboard with cherry mx blue switches ?

http://www.gameshop.com.sg/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=filco+majestouch&x=0&y=0

the second one .

Thanks !

welcome to geekhack

it depends on what kind of game you will be playing really, are you a FPS gamer? Cherry blacks are very good for FPS but probably not the most fitting switch for typing.

the 6gv2 uses cherry blacks,

if you let us know what you will be using your keyboard for, everyone will share their input and will give you a pretty good idea of what to get.

cherry blacks are fantastic for FPS gaming, and really not too bad for typing either once you get used to 'em. How much can you get a 6Gv2 for? if you can find a good deal on it then it's a pretty good choice.

looks like you are located in singapore? can't you get a hold of other Chinese mechanicals?(PLU ML-87, Noppoo choc mini etc.) Those are cheaper than the  6gv2 and pretty well made.

I would choose the one that's cheaper. There's not really that much difference between these keyboards after all.

the 6gv2 is cheaper by 5 bucks ~  if there's not much difference between the two i think i'll get the 6gv2 because i would have a complete SS set lol

wtf ? that 6gv2 is so overpriced...for only 5 bucks more I'd go with the filco.

One thing to consider is the possibility of a Filco tenkeyless. Would you be wanting to try a tenkeyless keyboard, or do you think you absolutely need a numpad? It's a lot easier to use your keyboard in a more ergonomic fashion and have it centered when using a tenkeyless or a small form factor keyboard.

Another thing to consider is that the Steelseries has a Bigass enter key (see the picture). If the price difference is only a few bucks, then my choice would turn to the Filco because of the normal Enter key, and R-shift layout.

I've ever owned a 6gv2, so I can't give you a first-hand advice, but the filco  probably has the best build quality you could ever ask for.

Plus the 6gv2 has a big enter key, could be a problem in the future if you decide to get some new keycaps.

yup, +1 for the tenkeyless versions.

Also if i recall correctly, the 6gv2 doesn't have the mouse feet that pops up in the back of it, deal breaker for me :)

Yep, with only $5 difference in price, I think we both agree that a Filco is a better choice - Be it Tenkeyless or a full size keyboard.

The biggest deal breaker for me would be the right shift key. I'm so used to hitting the left edge of the shift key that I would constantly miss the shift and hit |\ -key instead.

It has no feet, but the build is inclined in a superior way. Also KBC is going to supply keycaps for them.
The sound of the keyboard and the quality of the usb cable is way better than the Filco.
SS has cherry stabilizers which is imo comfortable and sturdy.
