Cherry G84-4400 keyboards for cheap!
« on: Thu, 10 February 2011, 11:08:00 »
Hi, I work for MovieStop, the DVD sales daughter-company of GameStop (which you've never heard of unless you live in the South-East USA). We ordered a boatload (well, 9) of Cherry G84-4400 keyboards for a little kiosk experiment that didn't take off, and now they're just sitting here, collecting dust.

Nobody at the office wants to use them because eww they don't have a tenkey and they don't even have a windows key oh my God.

In fact the only thing I can find to object about them is the placement of the Enter key, which is vertical instead of horizontal and my pinky keeps missing it and hitting the pipe + slash button instead. But that's neither here nor there.

I didn't think much of them until I took one home and played some games with it, which is when I discovered the wonder that is the Cherry ML switch, which these have. They're quite lovely. Also they have a dumb built-in trackball which you'll never use. Unless you use it as a server keyboard in which case it's awesome.

Point is, I need to sell them. They retail for over $120 on average, but my bossy says I can get away with selling them for $50, shipping & handling free. Does that sound like anything anybody might be interested in? I think our Paypal account is still active.

EDIT: Here is a picture of all the boards:

As far as I know the 4400 is the version without trackball, the 5400 has the trackball.
I'll assume these are 5400 since you mention the trackball.
Im interested and intrigued! I'd love one of these for my upcoming mitx build. Any chance you'd do international shipping? If so, could I please have a quote to germany?

Thanks,
ascaii

No, I'm pretty sure it's the G84-4400.  That's what it says on the bottom anyway.  I'll ask around about international shipping, but our shipping manager's out so I don't know if I'll have an answer for you today.

400dpi though.  With a small trackball that sucks royally.

Yeah, the trackball's pretty horrifying.  It serves its (intended) purpose as a kiosk keyboard or something for a server that you don't use much, but if you ignore the trackball's failure at self-realization the keyboard portion is awesome.

I've actually kind of gotten quite spoiled on the compact layout.  Reaching for CTRL+7 and up during StarCraft 2 games is much easier on this thing.

The worst criticism I can give it is that it requires much more precision when you're typing, otherwise you'll fat-finger a few keys at once.  But the actual shape of the keys makes that a very temporary issue.

Any idea which switches these use exactly?  Also, can you take any pics?

Yup, Cherry MLs.  I'll bring my camera to work tomorrow and take some pictures, but for what it's worth they're all what you might call "Mint In Box."
