FILCO / Leopold or Cherry G80-3000? [Europe]
« on: Sat, 05 March 2011, 16:04:21 »
Hello, I'd like some advice:

I'm going to buy my first mechanical keyboard and from what I've been reading and from those youtube videos of ppl typing, I've narrowed my preferences to cherry mx brown and clear.

Between those two I think I'd like the heavier keys of the clear switches more. Also, I prefer us layout (a necessary feature) and tenkeyless (can be dropped if justified)

My budget lies within the 80-130€. I live in Portugal but I have the opportunity of shipping the keyboard to germany, if it makes it cheaper.

So the options are Cherry g80-3000 LQCEU-0 (cherry mx clear us layout), FILCO Majestouch FKBN87M*/EB (cherry mx brown us layout tenkeyless) or Leopold FC200RT/AB (cherry mx brown us layout tenkeyless).

Cherry G80-3000 - 64 € shipped  link
FILCO - 141 € shipped (through keyboardco) link
Leopold - from what I understand, $99+$50 shipping = 107€ + customs (I'd guess around 130-140€) through EK link

So my question is, what is your opinion on FILCO/Leopold vs the Cherry G80? Is the superior quality build worth more than double the price of the G80?

Also, can anyone tell me if the G80 is plate mounted or PCB? From what I read in the wiki, PCB is better and allows for a quieter bottoming out, right?

Thanks!

It's PCB-mounted. I prefer PCB-mounted because it's less noisy, but some folks prefer plate-mounted for a more heavy and solid feel. To each their own.

Actually the noise is from the keystem hitting the switch and not the plate or the pcb.

Actually, the keystem hitting the switch causes a different amount of noise on a plate-mounted board than a PCB-mounted board, Mr. Smarty Pants. On plate-mounted boards, it makes a definitive metallic 'ping' sound.

I thought Das Keyboard was plate mounted.  I am typing on it right now and i get no ping noise.  Are my ears just not...tuned enough?

There are more things about a keyboard that contribute to noise level too (not to mention the entire construction); the case type, the key type, etc.

There is no ping sound on my Steelseries. However I agree that the filco sounds like crap.
Why are you making everything personal?

Hmm...my experience is only with Filco so maybe it's just a Filco thing. For example, Realforces are plate-mounted but are VERY quiet.

I have also found that black switches sound different than browns and the mousepad absorbs the resonance quite well.

Go for the cherry clears.
They are cheap and you can keep the switches for later mods.
