UK MX Black switch keyboard
« on: Thu, 17 March 2011, 12:26:07 »
Hi Guys,

I am looking to purchase a keyboard for use in work.

I have decided to get a keyboard with cherry black switches but as I won't be gaming in work (sadly) I have no requirements for NKRO or backlighting etc.

The only two requirements are cherry MX black switches and a UK layout - either full size or tenkeyless.

The cheapest option I can see is this:

Any better ideas ?

Why do you want the black switches for office use?

You could try contacting Ascaii.  He has some used boards for sale at very low prices.  The keys will be labeled with German characters, but the board will have the same left shift and return key that you're used to.

Then you could look out for a cheap g81 (keycaps are compatible) or even jump in on the round 3 double shot replacement group buy.

Or a noppoo choc mini or a KBC Poker...

If you like linear like MX Black... The MX Red are lighter and probably a bit less noisy for an office environment. I don't know who makes MX Red board with UK layout.

Mx reds are lighter so it's easier to buttom out on them, therefore they are likely to be louder than mx blacks.

I own three mechanical boards, a filco with blues, a compaq with browns and a thermaltake with blacks. I don't think I would get away with the noise of the blues in the office and actually quite like typing on the linear switches anyway.

Hmmm, maybe I will pm Ascaii.

I am already in the group 3 buy, although I may need to check for key profiles etc depending on what board I end up getting. Thanks.

**An aside**

I read somewhere this keyboard won't work via usb, when using a ps/2 to usb adaptor, could that be correct ?

http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_details.asp?PRODUCT=668

Now I have found these on ebay, with a G81 model number rather than the G80 in the link above ???

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/G81-1800LPMGB-0-Cherry-Classic-Line-G81-1800-keyboa-/130477142928?pt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_KeyboardsMice&hash=item1e610b3390

**edit** I worked out that the G81 is not an MX Black mechanical keyboard.

I've got an old G80-1800 (from ascaii - thanks!) - works with a blue cube adapter with no problems at all.
