Focus Fk-2002 Strange issues

Hi,

I Recently got the mentioned Keyboard and i have kinda strange issues:

At works perfectly fine in the Bios and during boot-time but in windows it sometimes stops working right after startup. Im typing this lines on that Keyboard now - but thats kinda like a miracle ;)

I can see those symtomes on two different Pc, directly connected and VIA belkin ps2/USB adaptor. Another stange thing is, that all the LEDs aren't working in Windows. BIOS is fine everytime (although I didn''t test the USB-Adaptor in Bios.

Do you have any Advice?

It is probably just you.  Maybe give it some time. Keyboard works fine for me, so do the leds.  It could be that the drivers are installing or something.

Hi,

I gave it about 30 minuts i think that's sufficent ;)

The strange thing about this is, that from time to time it works. And if it does it'll stop working again, if i reboot the system or enter standby mode.

I'll check the capacitor today, maybe its faulty.

How do you mean that? Something is clearly broken here, either the keyboard itself (likely) or some windows driver etc.
Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix it apart from contacting the manufacturer/retailer to discuss a return.

Yea as I said, i'm goin to desolder and measure all the capacitors as soon as i have time. But, if it is a capacitor, why doesn't the error occur in bios?

Anyways, a return is not possible as this little peice of hardware is about 10 years old ;)

Btw, other ps/2 keyboards work well on both pcs.

Hmm.. so you mean BIOS uses different scancodes than windows?

Is there any way I can get it to work? But, why does it work from time to time in Windows (at least on 1 Pc)?

It also sounds like you're testing it in PS/2 and through an active adapter on USB then comparing the results as the same thing.

My point is that it shouldn't act the same in both. If it is doing it wrong in multiple places in multiple ways its probably the keyboard that has a problem though. Does it have an XT switch or something?

Yes it has a switch but it doesn't work in either of the positions.
I'll come back to you as soon as I measured all of the capacitors, which is pretty much work though.

Does it have that many electrolytics? Most boards don't have more than 2 or 3.

Anyway, watch out for bad solder joints, and do check the cable. My guess it's some kind of intermittency issue.

Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

The cable is ok.

It doesen't have many capacitors. About 5. Starting the whole process is the issue ;)

Hi again, I got time to check the capacitors.

Everything is alright and the circuit-board looks also ok and isn't dirty in any way.

As the Keyboard is working in Bios, I guess it's a software issue.

I'll check it in Windows XP and report back.

Btw: Both PCs had Logitech G11 Drivers installed. Could this the issue (although I already removed them)

Hi,

I got the chance to test the Keyboard on a WindowsXP-Laptop where G11 drivers weren't installed in the past. I got the same results.
Seems that something is broken somehow. But why the hell is it working perfectly in the BIOS?

OK Guys I'll give it up.

I can't get it to work properly. The only common thing with all the 3 Pc is an Intel chipset. Maybe its somwhow incompatible to this keyboard.


But *woohoo* I know now at least what to do to get it to work in Windows.
As simple as: Don't press any button or go into BIOS during boot. Now even the numlock-Led works.

I'd apprechiate any new ideas, but... well it works now, but not after standby...

You really hit your keyboard that much before booting? The only reason I do is to go past the dual boot screen.

Hi,

Well the scancode Idea may be good. Unfortunately I'm not quite into that stuff. So what can I do about this?

Another thing is, if the Keyboard doesn't work it won't even get recognized in the device-manager.

The reason why I hit the keyboard during boot-time was because of a dual-boot. Which I disabled for now as I don't need it very often.

But what's really annoying is that it doesn't work after standby.

I want to add, that I found a solution.
It simply was the Motherboard AND the USB Adaptor (I guess both didn't provide enough Power). Now I use a Revoltec Ps2 to USB-Converter and everything runs just fine.

Well, i have a Gigabyte EP35DS3.

But don't add it to the list. This revoltec adaptor provides 400ma which is much more than the old one (it think it had 100) but not enough as the keyboard sometimes suddenly stops working.

So in conclusion i need an adaptor providing the full 500ma, any suggestions one buyable in austria? (or maybe surrounding contries)

As a last resort I also thought about modifying a PS/2 extension cable (or the keyboard itself) to provide pover via an external power-Supply ;)

Just for the sake of completing this thread I want to add that a blue cube solved all my Problems. Everything is working fine. It seems that it wasn't a power issue at all. Thanks again to Half-Saint for selilng me this nice peice of hardware.
