also curious what the drawbacks of pcb mounted switches are, if any.

I think not too different ftom the max height of the numeric row of most mech keyboards.

Personally I thunk that PCB mounted switches have just advantages.

Theoretically a plate mounted switch should be more firm, pratically the square holes of most plate mounted keybords are so large that the switch is more wobbly on plate mounted than in pcb mounted.
