Should I upgrade my computer?
« on: Mon, 09 May 2011, 10:28:04 »
So lak i got the itchy computer upgrade syndrome, it's called itchy computer upgrade syndome for short.

My current computor.
I7-930
jiggabyte x58a-UD3R
G.skill 6gb triple
msi GTX460 cyclone
cosair HX750
SLOW 7200RPM HARD DRIVE

in my search for upgrading the disk of hardness, i researched the disk of solidus and found out the marvel controller on the x58 is crappy for the sata3. So should i upgrade to sandy bridge for the intel native aboriginal sata3 controller for my future vertex 3 disk of solidus?

Changing a processor and a motherboard just to squeeze out every last drop of performance for a ssd, sounds like a nice choice
I'd prefer to make do with what I have and upgrade when the computer it is slow. Can't tell the difference between marvell and intel sata3 controller other than benchmarking anyway imho.

I think the base components of your PC are still too good to upgrade until Ivy Bridge. Get the SSD anyway.

Thank goodness there are better games for the PC than Crysis 2. The modding community is huge for some of these other games and can fix the consolitis.
The Stalker series
The Elder Scrolls series
The Fallout series
The original PC Crysis game
and a few others....certainly not for the plug-n-play crowd!
btw...I just sold my Intel dualcore system.

PC's are only regulated to mmo's/rts/ and diablo style click click click, otherwise console gaming is where it's at.

If you are serious...you don't know much about PC gaming. Map building and mods are plentiful for many games and I've never touched an RTS game or a MMO.

map building and mods for what? FPS? they have map builders on the console as well.

There isn't much a PC can do that a console can't do, as I said aside from RTS/MMo's you can play everything on console with nary a difference. Sure a pc port will have better graphics, and controls that you can customized, that's obvious when you're comparing a computer built for gaming starting with at least $600 vs. $200/$300 console. What's the argument? FPS is better on the PC? well of course but the same game on a console sells better than a PC counterpart, pretty much a multiplatform FPS will be
xbox360
ps3
PC
in terms of sales, why? the experience is better on a PC, that weeny ass thumbstick is so imprecise it feels like that is how the game cheats to kill you, with an inferior pointing solution. It's cuz for the price of a PC that will run at the same graphics as a console just doesn't seem like such a great deal.
Kids don't want to troubleshoot problems no more, they just want to play, why do most of us know command lines? cuz we had to get that damn EMS 386 upper memory so we could play those DOS games, kids now a days have a mac laptop and an xbox why bother with a PC.

Certainly the consoles are where the money is. I've got a PC anyway (sometimes 3 of them) and they are a hobby. I like to build them ,tweak them, and do a few things you're not supposed to do with them (a little). Its my music, my mail, my communication, my movies and my technology learning tool.
I don't need no stinking console. Yes, I'm quite old. I've never had one so you can imagine what a controller feels like to me.
If you only game there is nothing wrong with a console.

Hugs on Staten Island come with extra stuff, not sure you want that kinda stuff being an already endangered species and all.  It's my understanding that panda's don't come in contact with this sort of stuff since it's sexually transmitted and you're all celibate.

Or you could get the 2GB 6950 and flash it into a 6970. @PandaR: I personally have a 580 which I love - but it's a lot more expensive. I'd recommend upgrading your graphics card first if you're interested in gaming (BF3 coming out in November). That way you can transition to Ivy Bridge in Q4 without having lost much value. A 6950 now will cope very well with BF3 when you add another 6950 in Q4 (or another 580 if you choose to go down the nVidia route).

On the Bit-tech forums most people who've flashed seem to be fine - if you've heard numerous reports of this I'd be interested to know as I was considering doing it myself; links appreciated.
