you know what'd be great?
« on: Sun, 10 July 2011, 16:27:04 »
An "adapter key" for Cherry MX keyboards that was just a blank key that would accept IBM Model M keycaps.  Just swapped my Model M back to my desk because I need to take my Cherry board to work tomorrow.  The keys just *look* better - and they feel great too.

Anyone else agree with me?  Or am I just a little nuts?

That would be pretty cool, but I don't know that it would be possible. Comparing keys from the IBM to the one Cherry MX board I currently have (a kinesis), while the tops are the same size, the IBM keys are longer, from front to back. Plus, the cherry keyboards use different profiles on different rows, while the IBM does not. For instance, the QWERTY row keys are MUCH shorter than the number row keys, which are themselves a bit lower than IBM key caps.

But it would still be cool.

I think the different height thing could be overcome by having a different "adapter key" for each row... maybe?

of course I am just dreaming here...  I suppose nobody is ever really going to make the "perfect keyboard" - and even if I thought it was such, probably only five people would agree with me, and everyone else would come up with ideas to improve it.

If you check out the modifications area, Ripster has done key cap swaps by cutting the stems out of keycaps and gluing them into other types of keys.

Cut him some slack, ripster. He's fairly new, and he did exactly what we always say noobs should: he snagged nearly every kind of switch he could, tried them all, and is trying to sell the ones he didn't like.

I admit, it is sort of frustrating to have to read the OP to know what the hell they want, but he'll get better at it, I'm sure.

You're generally very polite to people with low post counts. Hopefully that isn't changing because so many of them are asses.

That, and maybe revise the second level down to 50. Lots of folks here deserving of the snark don't stick around long enough to get it.

Well, maybe that WAS a bit snarky.  Sorry, I should have waited until you hit a post count of 100.

Lol - I need to revise that.  The Wiki subforum and the search engine here really doesn't work.
I'm going to reindex the search and see if that helps.

What, specifically, is broken with the wiki?

Well,  as the Wiki subforum has grown there are a BUNCH of articles either dead, under construction or just don't belong there.  Makes it hard to find the good stuff.  Plus the format is like no Wiki I've ever seen.

I can compile a list of dead articles if you want.

The search engine is just kinda weird lately.  It's like I know it's there but they are ignored in the search.  I'm having much better luck with Google.
PM me a list.

The wiki software is odd, I will grant you that.  We can have a discussion on whether we want to migrate to something else...but that will ABSOLUTELY require a LOT of work to recreate content.

OP, you want a piece of plastic that clips on to a Cherry switch underneath, and on top of which you can clip a Model-M-type cap?

Can't you 3D-print stuff like that? It sounds like most of the wear would happen on the cap, so a decent 3D materials shouldn't fall apart there.

Hah.  Maybe *you* can, but I don't have access to the fun toys.

I'd be willing to take a stab at CADing it up though :)

Oh, and ripster, I didn't mean to make you snark.  sorry 'bout that.

Ripster is a Snark.

Ripster, btw, what's up with all your pictures vanishing? Seems Flickr doesn't really like you that much?
It's all over your wikis and posts. The doubleshot modding, the PBT wear test, scissor switch wiki, and lots more!
