Computer stutters, its really annoying

Hey guys, i'm pretty decent with computers i built myself a desktop last winter and it has a i5 2500k with an asus mobo and a radeon 6970 in it, the problem is that i'm getting stutters whenever i do anything, literally anything, if i listen to music the music does not pause the the entire screen freezes so its a limited video problem. it will stutter as i am typing this, it will stutter if i go on that typing speed website that was put up in the keyboards section, literally whenever (still only video though)

My cpu temperature isn't climbing whenever it stutters, my gpu temp is not either, (i have another aftermarket heatsink coming in the mail tomorrow)

Things i have tried,
registry cleaner
Reverting my overclock to stock timings
moving my computer to better ventilation
updating graphics drivers
trying a different cable to my monitor,
whole new monitor still stutters

anyone have any ideas or pearls of wisdom?

specs,
core i5 2500k stock clocked
sapphire HD 6970
crucial 128 gig ssd
750W corsair power supply
8 gigs ripjaw ram

i am seriously distressed over this

Try swapping out your video card for a spare if you have one lying around, OR using onboard video if your mobo has outputs.

There's a Dell at work thay does this. After trying about 10 different little things, I replaced the mainboard with a spare (identical, but NIB). It worked for about 3 months, then resumed the video "hangs" as bad as ever. A reboot always stops it for a bit, but more than an hour of uptime and it reverts to hanging. BTW integrated video on this system. Don't have the specs handy or I'd offer them up to see if we could find a similar component.

well i just flashed the bios on my motherboard, tried to get the windowes approved version of my videoc ard drivers, i may try and swap out the card next

see the thing is now that if i move a window around in a circle on my screen, the mouse responds, as in i see it moving all around but the window will freeze in a spot for about 2 seconds or so and then it will snap back to where the cursor is, that help any theories?

edit, swapped video cards, still the same ****ty laggy window dragging

use unetbootin to put a live linux distro on a usbkey, (if you dont have a linux distro handy) and look what happen in linux.

If something similar happen even there it's an HW problem.

You can alsto try to downclock the vga to see if it helps, check also if you have HDD related errors in the windows logs and eventually check the HDD speed with hdtach or hdtune.

so, after putting better video card back in, the stuttering has gone away... i am so confused...

nvm it is just happening less frequently now...

edit: going to check the transferrates with hd tune when i get home, then i'm going to check o see if my bios are seing the ssd in sata III

I would also highly suggest testing linux. It would really help isolate the problem. Do you possibly have another cpu with the same socket type? I'm assuming you overclocked everything last winter and everything was fine until now?

Be careful benching or testing the ssd. It's a sandforce drive? It can make a worse problem. To check the ssd remove the pagefile from it if you have it there, then run sdelete to clean all the dirty cells to make sure it's not a problem. Is the controller passing trim commands? There really isn't much safe testing to be done on sandforce ssd. I would try Linux too to troubleshoot for any other hardware problems. It never hurts to run memtest just in case either.

this seems to indicate a software issue to me.  i would look to the video drivers or OS

its the hard drive i;m running hd tune and i'm watching the speed drop as it freezes  does this mean i need to rma or is there a fix for ssd stuttering
edit: apparently there is a firmware fix for this, will report back on this in a few
off topic: i have gotten screwed on every single group buy i have entered...
