Aw dammit.
« on: Fri, 05 August 2011, 15:49:29 »
Just got my shiny new WASD keyboard today...  I thought it would be fitting to test it out by posting to this august forum.

Good news...  I apparently can type almost well on a near-otaku keyboard... (I can't see the etching at all at my desk without turning on my desk lamp.)  Certainly not as fast as I can when I can read the caps, but not as badly as I feared.

Bad news...  I bought this board with blues...  I really like them.  Am tempted to scrap original plan of modding to clears and taking this board to work.  Not sure if coworkers will appreciate the tactility of the blues however.  Are the blues really significantly more tactile than the browns?  I swear I can feel the difference, but this is the first *new* board that I've had with Cherry MX switches - the two boards I've had with browns were bought used 'n' cheap from "a cartain auction site."

Quandary...  keep as is and buy another board to mod to clears - or ergo clears?  Forego awesomeness and keep using my G80-8000 POS board at work?

You all are a bad influence...  but on the upside at least with these keycaps I will be forced to become a better typist.

Anyway, I will post a review maybe in a week or so after I've had a chance to use this board for a while and develop a more distinct opinion of it than just "ooh, shiny thing."

Edit:  I think I have been helped to make a decision as to whether or not to swap to black Cherry doubleshots or keep the WASD etched keys...  my roommate, who has been loudly mocking my recent keyboard geekery and the fact that I've got 5 or 6 Cherry POS boards laying around for various reasons (some of them have good switches, some have good keycaps, none sadly have both) just came downstairs, looked at my desk, undoubtedly to mock my latest acquisition, and said "dude, that is an awesome looking keyboard."  Looks like etched it is :)

Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)

I don't think it's just you, Blues feel more tactile than Browns to me too. (Had a Filco Tenkeyless with Browns but sold it to a friend and got a Leo Tenkeyless Otaku with Blues. :3)

I might just be crazy though. What I mainly like about Blues is the audible clickyness, it's almost addictive to me.

Keep both, and bring the loudest to work! The only time my coworkers ever complained about my Minitouch was when I clicked one button repeatedly in a steady rythm.
What\'s in the back of my car? A cdr lol

Well, let's just say that apparently a Model M is apparently too loud for some people in my office.  This one is definitely quieter than that, and also quieter than the Alps whites which are my only basis of comparison.

I guess I can give it a go and see how it goes.  I do like the blues so far, and while I do also really like the clears, I can't say that I like them so much more that I really want to rip this board apart, which was my original plan.  Given the choice, I think I still would specify clears for a new board, but this is my very first board with blues and while I'm not completely used to them yet, I think that they're now my second favorite Cherry switch.  (also makes me want to try ergo clears...)
