Apricot keyboard?
« on: Mon, 05 September 2011, 22:52:37 »
Hello all,

I cleaned up a couple of boards on the weekend. One was a garden variety chicony, but the other was a little bit more interesting. It's an 'Apricot' branded keyboard, made in 1989. I am yet to find any pictures or information on this particular model anywhere online. I've never heard of Apricot computers before, but there is a little bit of info about them here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apricot_Computers

Will post some photos of it when I get home, but here are some details that I remember:

-Doubleshot keycaps, and they look like they may be cherry-compatible
-Standard US qwerty layout (apparently the older ones had their own design)
-Cable terminates with a standard PS/2 port
-The keycaps attach to rounded black removable switches, which then make contact with the rubber dome below.
-The stabilisers attach to the keys through two removable square plastic 'links' (each about the size of a 'jumper' that is used to set an IDE device to be master/slave/cable select).
-There is some yellowing of the keys, but everything is in great condition other than that (is there an easy way to make a poor man's Retr0bright?)

So, a potentially rare and interesting board?

I really don't remember the keyboard, but surely I remember the trackball, likely the first commercial trackball available in an IBM (quasi)compatibile.

BTW the whole Apricot PC was a little milestone in the PC era, so I believe that any of their components should have a value.

As promised, here are some pics:

It cleaned up really well (will try and post a proper 'after' photo if people are interested). Some yellowing though.
