New to mech keyboards, strange differences between blues
« on: Wed, 28 September 2011, 18:48:32 »
Hello,

I'm somewhat new to the whole mechanical keyboard. So far my experience between keyboards is a Logitech G15 1st gen, Creative Labs Fatal1ty keyboard, a Compaq MX-11800 (used at work), Unicomp Customizer, finally I tried out a Razor BlackWidow (which I returned shortly after). Now I just purchased two keyboards, one Filco ten keyless with browns and another Rosewill with blues.

I was expecting the Filco to feel the same as the Compaq MX-11800 which I really enjoyed using at my old job, and it does feel very similar. The keys all have the space force to type, the sounds are the same across the board. But the Rosewill is another story, the keys feel off for some reason. I can't pin-point it but the Razor BlackWidow used the same switches and felt more quality, like the clicks I could hear but in the Rosewill they don't feel the same across the board and the spacebar feels very mushy compared to the Filco.

Since discovering WASD, I'm tempted to return the Rosewill, and buy another full sized keyboard for work using browns. I do a bunch of typing at work and switching from my current keyboard (the slim Creative). But I just am not sure if this is a normal experience with blues or maybe I'm a bit over detailed in my typing with the Rosewill?

Oh, the reason why I returned the first Razor BlackWidow was due to getting something more basic without shiny plastic. Other than that, the keyboard was very nice, but the workmates didn't like it. :)

Thanks!

My guess (and it can't be much more than that) is that it is more the Rosewill than the switches.

In most things in life the price of something does tell you something about the quality.

Those extra dollars that Filco cost over a Rosewill may well make the difference for your fingers (and not at all for the next person).

If you don't find the Rosewill to your liking than return it and try something else. This stuff is all very personal and your  fingers will tell you when you have found the right board for you.

Maybe you just haven't been around mech keyboards long enough, but the difference to most people between a 11800 and a Filco is drastic; mainly due to the Filco being plate mounted. The plate creates a much different feeling.

As for the Rosewill feeling off...not sure about that. I thought Rosewill's were made by the same OEM as Filcos and thus they are almost identical. I think the Rosewill controller is even the same. Either way, go with what you like. I am typing on a WASD keyboard with browns right now and it's amazing.

Wow... you're like the only other person I've met who has that Creative Fatal1ty keyboard haha. I rocked that thing for a looooong time before finding Cherry switches.

I have used another Cherry Blue keyboard, the Razor BlackWidow, but the Rosewill for some reason feels less precise. I think the issue is that when pressing the keys across the board, I noticed they do not feel the same. The Rosewill is build well, but I think it might just be my personal feeling about the keys. Also I'm not experienced with meachanical keyboards, I only read up on a few brands and owned just a couple.

I'm going to return the Rosewill and order a WASD instead with Cherry Browns plus o-rings for work.

Heh, yeah I think I bought the Creative Fatal1ty on sale at the time. I actually like the formatting of the keyboard because it's fullsized keyboard but compressed to have arrow keys below the main area instead of keeping the arrow keys between the 10 key pad. It's my work keyboard and like it, but I would really like to switch to a mechanical keyboard due to the amount of typing required every day. This is really the only scissor switch keyboard I really like, maybe the Thinkpad keyboard would be better?
