Is the Unicomp plastic barrel the same as an IBM Model M?
« on: Thu, 29 September 2011, 13:58:05 »
Cant find in the search if it's possible to swap the plastic barrel from a Unicomp to a Model M. I notice there are some slight differences (front edge doesn't have a lip and extra hole for the window keys).

Just wondering since I will be bolt modding an SSK and needs the plastic barrel replaced. Tenkey section doesn't matter since it will be cut off anyways.

People have suggested it works. New "frame" (as Unicomp calls them) cost $10. My plate has multiple cracks but I bolted it anyway and replaced the springs with new ones. Not sure if it feels right because I didn't really use it before I bolt modded it. If you do it tell me how it goes.

It's supposed to be the same. Rivet placement is the same, keys layout is the same (in 101 keys version), plastic in both cases is proven to be ABS, but the feel is slightly different. Maybe that's because our Model Ms became slightly brittle and/or loose over the years?
